Features : Rio Narley’s New Single ‘Target’ About the Struggle to Prove Himself to Those Closest to Him

“I came from poverty, sleeping in hotels with my mom,” he says. “I came from a background where I was around a lot of violence but it didn’t turn me into the person I am now. I made it out.”

He developed a deep passion for music, but friends and family downplayed his art and doubted he was really the person he is today. They didn’t think there was a light at the end of his tunnel. That struggle to prove himself to those closest to him is the subject of his newest single, “Target,” which will be released April 1.

“I always saw myself as a target because I was always the person people expected to mess up,” he says. “Even with every good thing I had going on, people didn’t want to believe that I served a purpose. But I always believed I served a purpose to the universe, not just to one community.”

What those doubters didn’t realize – but Rio Narley does – is that his music can have a positive impact on people, especially the younger generation. “Target” offers a message of overcoming any obstacle, whether family or whatever life throws at you.

The single will be part of his upcoming album Hidden Treasure, slated for release in September. Featuring eight tracks, the album is a mix of upbeat and low tempo songs that cover life and struggle.

“My songs are all stories,” he says. “They’re going to start off like storytelling and then the exciting part of that story is what I’m going to embrace. It’s very earthy.”

The album as a whole is about not knowing yourself but finding yourself and embracing that person while blocking out the negative noise.

“It’s like you found that hidden gem inside of yourself you didn’t know you had and embracing it in the best way possible,” Rio Narley says. “Creating a positive impact not only on yourself but the people around you.”

His music combines hip hop, world and new era sounds, and his last single, “Cosmo League,” has already made waves, generating several thousand plays on YouTube alone in a matter of a few weeks.

Hidden Treasure is the follow-up to his 2021 release Evolution. Rio Narley has also released a handful of singles since 2018.

But if not for a conscious decision to shift his mentality, that music might not have been possible. Rio Narley used to give back the same energy his doubters gave to him. Then he realized the only way people would believe he was a changed person is if he showed them.

“I still say I love you to these people because they are family,” he says. “I still wish them the best. I didn’t have that mentality when I was younger.”

Rio Narley says unification is very important to the universe, which goes back to his belief he serves a purpose for the universe as a whole, not just one community.

“If we realize that helping the world universally is important to help all communities, then we’ll be able to bind together as a nation to come up with plans to help those communities,” he says.
