TAMPA, Fla. — Singer/songwriter Shelby Bond says her life is her inspiration for her music and she has a simple but important message in her latest single, an emotional track named “Option.”
“You should know your worth and not just stick around and wait for someone to realize it,” Bond said. “Everything that I write usually comes from the heart. It usually comes from some type of life experience.”
“Option,” her latest single, was released in September and is available on Youtube, Spotify and other streaming platforms.
Bond said the song was inspired by an experience with someone who didn’t take her feelings for him seriously.
“I was talking to this boy and I really liked him and he just wasn’t really taking me seriously,” Bond said. “He was talking to his ex-girlfriend still and blowing plans off. I just realized I didn't want to do this anymore, I don’t want to talk to you. It took me about 30 minutes to write this song.”
She said she wrote the song to a beat she liked initially back in February, but she took the time to refine it and work with George Elliott, the owner of her label, Elliott Kid Ross Productions, to perfect it before releasing it.
“Her versatility, and you’ll hear that on the album, is incredible,” Elliott said. “She can sing this kind of emotional song, then totally flip and do a complete dance track. It’s really amazing, her versatility is unbelievable.”
Bond said she’s been excited about music since she was very young.
“I’ve always really been into music,” she said. “I went to church growing up and I always saw my sister performing on stage. I was just very eager to perform too even though I was like a toddler. I even tried to run up on the stage during a Christmas play because I was upset I was too little to be in it. But the next year they made me an angel. I pretty much started in church. I did choir and musicals and plays growing up, competitions and just performances in high school and middle school.”
Bond describes her sound as a “raspy kind of tone, R&B kind of sound. But it can vary from song to song.”
Bond said her style of music varies from R&B, soul, pop, alternative, and EDM vocals. Her biggest influences are Amy Winehouse, Sinead Hartnett, Sabrina Claudio, and Jorja Smith.
She displays her versatility on a number of songs already released on Spotify, including singles titled “Blessing,” “Unhinged,” and “Burnt Out.”
Bond said these four songs and other new singles she's working on will be released in an album named “Virgo” that will be released in the next few months.
Elliott said they’ll be working with a couple of world-class producers on a number of singles for the album.
He said one producer they’ve already worked with for the track “Burnt Out,” has a No. 1 Billboard hit currently and they’ll be working with him on more tracks next month.
Bond said she has a number of songs written and waiting and a life full of adventures for her inspiration.
“It’s typically pretty easy for me to write about that stuff, the life experiences,” she said. “But if I try to make something up, that’s when writing becomes hard. My songs all come from genuine, true feelings.”
