He’s still just 17 years old, but MilneTheArtist isn’t wasting any time launching his music career.
The up-and-coming Australia teenager has already been making hip hop music for four years, and with eight singles under his belt since 2021, he’s gone from representing the youth of his native Sydney to introducing the world to his blend of melodic rap.
MilneTheArtist’s latest release – and his first of 2023 – just dropped in July. Called “TRENCH,” it’s also the first single mixed and mastered by Milne himself.
“It’s about a chick who I had constant problems with,” Milne says.
“Left me out in the trench,” he raps on the song’s chorus. “She don’t give a f***, knew it never make sense. Tell me why you hate me, Tell me why you play me like a test. She be looking at me, baby, now she’s calling me a mess, and I already tried my best.”
Milne’s sound has evolved since he was first introduced to the world of creating music when he was 14, at the house of a friend with some recording equipment. When that friend moved to Queensland, Milne was on his own to figure the rest out. He downloaded recording software, learned the ropes in the studio and was fortunate to come across 18-year-old South Australian artist Jesse Melancholy. The two formed a close friendship based on a shared creative process.
“He started to help me mix and create my own sound,” Milne says. “He started mixing my stuff back since 2020 and he still mixes my music to this day. We’ve got a good connection.”
Melancholy pushed Milne to add more electronic sounds and weird elements to his music, helping create the genre-bending tunes Milne’s known for today.
“TRENCH is the only song on Spotify I personally mixed and mastered myself instead of Jesse Melancholy so it’s got a different sound to it,” Milne says.
Milne is currently working on a single he expects to release this fall while still shaping his sound and pushing boundaries, like he did on last year’s “MILNE MADE THIS” that featured some especially creative use of autotune and EDM style synthesizer.
“I’m just trying to make the best songs I can and put them out there for people to hear,” Milne says. “I want to claim my own style and I’m still working on it.”
