Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, and producer, Picasso Brown brings us the multi-genre musical experience of 3am Tokyo. Blending pop, hip hop, EDM, reggae, rock, and more, the group’s sound is an elevated pop sure to please audiences of all audiences and walks of life. Led by Picasso, singer Eliza Vitale, and accomplished touring musicians on the bass, keyboard, and drums, 3am Tokyo brings their energetic stage performance to digital with their latest release, “Whoa Oh Oh.”
The hip-hop infused single was created as an opening act for 3am Tokyo’s live performances. “The song is fun and playful—and the beat makes you move,” shares the founder. “It’s fun on stage and we have fun with it. People who haven’t heard it before—which is most because it’s brand new—love it. It’s a whole vibe.”
“The song is basically an innuendo about lust, not love,” Picasso explains. “We made it PG, but when you’re listening to the words behind it, it’s not really PG. It’s about everything I make her feel and everything she makes me feel. It’s a sensual, sexy song.”
“Whoa Oh Oh” came to life rapidly. “We had it done in 4-5 hours,” shares Picasso, who produced and mixed the song. A writer and producer by trade, Picasso first created a beat and later collaborated with Eliza for the final track. “The beat is a mixture between pop, hip hop, and Afro beat all mixed in one song.”
While reminding listeners of summer, the single was designed to transcend seasons. According to the producer, the single is meant for the club/lounge scene. “It’s about people throwing vibes and drinking and dancing and getting close together. Having that sexy feeling about themselves. Feeling sexy when they dance to it with their partner and start swaying,” tells Picasso. “It’s also a different vibe when you’re in a car driving down the highway. I did that the other day and I felt like I was on vacation,” adds the producer.
Spanning decades of music and a variety of genres, 3am Tokyo boasts a repertoire that would make a true music aficionado proud. The group was formed as a performance outlet for Picasso, whose work had shifted toward studio time and away from stage time. “We developed a visual show before they were things,” adds Picasso. “Once we gathered a following from cover songs, we decided to put out songs that represent us to take to the national stage.”
Eliza, the female lead, joined the band a year prior. “She’s my Fergie if we were the Black-Eyed Peas,” jokes Picasso. “She brings a different vibe to the group that was always male dominated.” When she’s not performing with 3am Tokyo, Eliza can be found on stage at off-Broadway productions and making waves in the entertainment industry. Her robust voice demonstrates vast vocal experience and adds depth to the single.
These days, 3am Tokyo writes music by day and lights up the stage by night. On stage, 3am Tokyo delivers an energetic set that makes the group a fan favorite for visual production. Previously, their singles, “Can We Kick It” and “I Like It” earned Billboard 100 recognition and nationwide praise.
The release of “Whoa Oh Oh” helps make their music more accessible across the globe. “Not everyone will love the song and that’s fine—everyone has their own taste. But if it makes you feel good, share the song.”
