GUYMON, OK – Swift and stealth and sometimes in-your-face strong – the crafty works of Lord Ninja are on the rise in the world of Rap, R&B and Hip-Hop.
“I always felt like I was destined to make music,” said Lord Ninja. “I was maybe 10 years old –at home playing music – just imagining audiences cheering for my songs. I’ve always been drawn to music. It brings me joy and I feel fulfilled when I’m creating. It was something I was meant to do.”
With early signs of natural ability, Lord Ninja first picked up drums as a child; which led him to crafting beats in high school. The youth found inspiration everywhere – but especially from the music video “Thank God for the Day” by Metro Boomin.
“It was chilling,” Lord Ninja said. “I remember watching that and feeling inspired. I said, ‘I want to make these.’ And I’ve been making beats ever since.”
Born Josue Barrios, a Mexican American in Guymon, Oklahoma, Lord Ninja specializes in live freestyle moments. He started dropping songs a couple years ago, and now at the age of 23 he’s routinely releasing singles with more on the way.
“I have some party songs, chill songs, love songs – I have it all,” he said. “I can make a lot of kinds of music. I even have a couple of Latino songs doing well. I’m excited to release ‘Witness,’ this weekend – it’s about having fun with a Halloween vibe – the song basically wrote itself. I was talking to this girl, and piece-by-piece, it just came together. I like freestyle cause it comes off raw in real time.”
As Lord Ninja builds up his arsenal of singles on streaming services, he maintains a training regiment that’s good for the body, mind and soul.
“I’m going to keep making music, investing in myself and growing as an artist – one of the best things I can do is keep boxing,” he said. “Boxing helps me stay grounded, stay focused and balanced. It takes a lot of mental discipline, and I can tell in my music if I don’t box. As an artist, you gotta have something that keeps you steady. And training with a friend was where I picked up the ‘Lord Ninja’ name.”
It had a certain ring to it. It captured his confident heart and determined spirit to make it in the world of music. His next single “Gon’ Be Your Star” will hit digital platforms next month, and he’s planning an album project next year.
“I feel like if you love what you do, you’ll succeed in it,” Lord Ninja said. “You reap what you sow, and if you put in the work eventually something will happen – just don’t give up. My sound and my voice are unique. I have a lot to offer for whatever you’re feeling. I’m diverse. I’m worth listening to and I can do a lot.”
