Educator turned musician, GaREE ALL brings us his latest single, “Way Out of My League.” The single is a fresh take on a modern relationship woe—one partner taking advantage of the other—with an unexpected ending.

From a self-proclaimed rebellious teenager to an adrenaline-seeking young adult, GaREE ALL spent his formative years on a roller coaster of run-ins with the law and an alcohol-fueled lifestyle. At some point, he felt a force within that told him he could do better for himself. His friendship with a man named Gene helped spark this revelation and supported GaREE on the path to continuing his education and starting a new life. Once he started to believe in himself, GaREE kept achieving. First, going from high-school dropout to working his way through college. Then, a Ph.D. Later on, he became a professor, followed by a university administrator.

Fast forward a few decades, and we meet GaREE in the present. With years of academia behind him, GaREE is finally ready to tune in to his creative side and pursue his love of music. “Way Out of My League” is his latest venture into music writing and self-expression.

“It’s a fun song about a powerful, wealthy, famous woman who could take advantage of a younger guy,” shares GaREE ALL. “It’s not about the gender. It’s about one person wanting another to do something they don’t want to do. And it remains a no go until the very end. He can’t be bought—except for a hefty price. In a way, there’s humor in it.”

The single was written in two stages. During the first stage, GaREE wrote 95% of the song based on the idea of having a huge status gap. “It was during the ‘Me too’ movement that I wrote another song called ‘Cheeky’ with an unfavorable reference to Harvey Weinstein. Then it occurred to me. It was mainly powerful men taking advantage of women. Then there’s also news where it goes the other way. In recent years, there have been occasions where female schoolteachers have taken advantage of younger boys—it’s unfortunate. So, I began thinking while it’s rare, sometimes a wealthy, powerful woman could take advantage of a young guy that doesn’t have too much. Like a big celeb having what you may call a ‘boy toy.’ It’s all about status gaps and the unfairness of it all.”

In “Way Out of My League,” the woman taking advantage of her partner is a huge celebrity, and he’s nobody. “She’s rich. He’s poor. She’s from a high-class family. Him not so much. She’s toured the world, staying in five-star hotels and luxury homes. He’s only been out of the state thrice. It’s a big contrast,” explains GaREE ALL.

GaREE wrote the song a while back yet recently gave it a modest makeover to reflect pop culture. “I recently added some lyrics to reflect a certain pop star with a certain football player,” adds the artist. “That was the second stage of writing. I wish that couple all the best, but couldn’t resist poking a little fun their way.”

When it comes to writing music, GaREE puts down the lyrics first. Next, he creates an acapella version of the song. Afterwards, he selects loops that go along with what he envisions the song to be. “I would love to find someone who likes to compose music. Someone I’m compatible with who has talent,” he adds. GaREE is also looking to “graduate from the ukulele” to the guitar. “Despite being older, I recently bought a guitar and started some lessons. I’m learning basic stuff. In a few months, I’ll play simple acoustic songs.”

In addition to “Way Out of My League,” GaREE is looking forward to releasing a few more songs in the near future. “No Mo’ Anger Row” is about making bad decisions when you’re angry. In another single, the artist speaks to the influx of people moving to Southern Florida from California; “it’s a song about two guys who meet in acting class and decide to leave California on a road trip to SoFlo—for more sunshine, beaches, and lower taxes.” In honor of the upcoming Holiday season, GaREE recently released “Dry Christmas” on Soundcloud and Spotify; it is also available as a lyric video on his YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/channel/UCg6W-kvC3MnEiLC4pDl-rvg

GaREE ALL is also looking forward to live performances, including one coming up on November 14, 8pm, at Arts Garage in Delray Beach, Florida. “People can contact me through my website. If you plan to come, let me know you read this article and I’ll bring you a free t-shirt. Heck, maybe we could go out for a nightcap afterwards!”
