Features : West Coast rap duo Pure Order debuts new single ‘Golden Glass’

West Coast rap duo Pure Order is on a mission to bring oneness to a hip hop culture that is too often divided.

“The founding principles of hip hop were love, peace, unity, having fun and creativity,” says emcee God’s Gift, one half of the duo. “It was originally formed as a stop the violence movement. It was telling people to come together in art and music. Over the years we’ve seen a decline. Beefs and people fighting against each other are glamorized and popularized to the point that people are losing their lives. Hip hop is divided against itself.”

Enter God’s Gift, an Oxnard, California native, and Los Angeles-based Nemesis, who aim to revolutionize the industry by offering up a return to the days of unity, and some sage advice.

The group’s latest single is “Golden Glass,” which was released Dec. 29. The song’s title is a metaphor for knowledge, and the two emcees remind their listeners that knowledge is a luxury that can be accessed – and treasured – by everyone.

“The luxuries that come from appreciating knowledge and applying it to our lives, that’s the bigger message of ‘Golden Glass’ and that’s what we want to infuse hip hop with right now,” says Nemesis. “In a market full of chaos and just saying anything on a record, we want to actually put thought into what we say on a record with care. ‘Golden Glass’ is a golden energy, it’s a positive energy. It’s powerful and indulgent.”

Already accomplished solo artists, God’s Gift and Nemesis released their first single as Pure Order in 2018 and have put out more than a dozen tracks since. Nemesis has released solo hits “Vibe Flow,” “Nefertiti the First,” and “Tigress” and is known as a lyrical wordsmith who wields her vocabulary like a samurai’s blade. God’s Gift featured on Lootpack’s Soundpieces: Da Antidote tracks “Episodes” and “Verbal Experiments” as well as Kankick’s From Artz Unknown track “Deleting Programs.”

The duo first connected over poetry before discovering they were both emcees operating lyrically on the same wavelength.

“I found out he was a rapper and he had a concept of Pure Order being an order of purity of the art of lyricism for hip hop and my views of hip hop are so similar that I really wanted to be a part of what Pure Order meant,” Nemesis says.

The pair bonded over their shared values, like focusing on the creativity of the genre and lyrics that paint pictures like art forms. Pure Order’s music includes concepts from scientific, mathematical and spiritual realms.

Musically, Nemesis is the group’s primary arranger and she views beats as the landscape and canvas for her art.

“We are West Coast artists but our music is still more innovative,” Nemesis says. “You can’t easily characterize our music in one genre except that it’s pure hip hop with those basic foundations that are part of what we love about the music.”

Pure Order plans to release an album featuring 10 tracks early this spring. A Nemesis solo album will follow soon after, and God’s Gift is also at work on a solo project.

“There will be videos for every drop and our goal really is just to keep coming with good product, good music, good visuals,” God’s Gift says.

“The industry is taking notice,” Nemesis says. “It’s really an exciting part of our career and once these albums drop I think it will go to another level.”
