Marcus Smith—otherwise known as MarcusCreatedIt—is the music producer, merch designer, and disability advocate ready to usher in a new era of sound in 2024. For the past 11 years, he’s been busy making his mark behind the scenes. Now, he’s ready to be heard.

Delivering future cinematic beats with hip hop, trap, R&B, Afrobeat, and reggae undertones, Marcus Smith is more than a musician. His moniker, MarcusCreatedIt, is the expression of many truths. Marcus puts his stamp on everything he touches, thus he creates it. Beyond the straightforward reading, the name highlights what is most important to Marcus as a creator: being open to all possibilities.

“I don’t want to be put in one particular box,” shares the artist. “I’m not just a music producer. I want to do different things—activist work, helping the community of people with disabilities, building my own studio and clothing store. I don’t want to be only one thing.”

Born with cerebral palsy and a genetic disorder called Spinal Muscular Atrophy, MarcusCreatedIt uses a wheelchair to offset the fatigue his legs feel from standing and walking short distances. Advocacy is one of his many passions, in addition to music.

For as long as he can recall, music has been a part of Marcus’ life. “Growing up with my parents and older sisters, I was exposed to all types of music as a young child. I grew up hearing Mary J. Blige, Marvin Gaye, Nas, John Legend, or Chris Brown blaring from speakers inside my house at any given time.” At age seven, Marcus joined his church choir and later, at age ten, played the snare drum with his community band.

In the age of technology, when anyone can learn to make music whether or not they’ve ever stepped in a music class, MarcusCreatedIt is a rare breed. Reading and writing music is what enables Marcus to create music beginning with a preferred key and writing from there. “I don’t just start playing. I can play, but I would rather see it first and then write. That’s my approach to making music,” adds Marcus.

MarcusCreatedIt finds inspiration in everyday life, from his surroundings to the people he interacts with. “It doesn’t matter who you are. If you’re doing something for the greater good of the community and the world, you are my influence,” he adds. MarcusCreatedIt translates that inspiration into beats, which he began making on Maschine software using Native Instruments. “Everything in life inspires me to make beats,” adds the artist. “When creativity and inspiration come, I make beats. When it doesn’t come, I don’t force it.”

His single, “Multiple Personalities” is a solid beat open to interpretation. Steady with melodies laced between drum rhythms, it acts as both easy listening as a standalone track and a blank canvas for a hip-hop song to be born.

For the past 11 years, MarcusCreatedIt has been silently producing beats, honing his craft and developing new tricks along the way. Now, he’s ready to collaborate with visionary artists who are looking to take his instrumentals to the next level.

Of all his accomplishments, MarcusCreatedIt cites his perseverance as his greatest skill. His passion, coupled with unwavering dedication, have led him down this path for more than a decade. “Having the strength to keep going is what I’m proudest of,” tells the producer. “This is a hard path—who knows what will happen in the future. But my will to keep going has pushed me forward.”

In addition to more interviews, MarcusCreatedIt is looking forward to a bright year ahead. In 2024, he is looking to keep releasing beats. He’s also working on a series of interviews to market his clothing line and merchandise.
