Blending subgenres like synthpop and EDM to create a sound truly their own, Millennium Resorts brings us “The Big Show,” a single off their upcoming concept album, In The Key of David. Although the full album version clocks in around 8 minutes in length, this “radio edit” single introduces the listener to Millennium Resorts’ unique musical experience. Fans of Tame Impala's hypno-grooves, Pink Floyd's psychedelic prog rock, and M83's immersive electronic dream pop will want to check out this release.

Millennium Resorts is made up of Scott Raulie and Jonathan Richerson.

“Jonathan is one of the most creative guitarists I’ve ever heard,” exclaims Scott. “Part of this project was inspired by the opportunity to showcase his unique approach to guitar and record some great guitar solos. To hear them though you’ll have to listen to the full album. As for me, I have a unique approach to composition and soundscapes.”

The duo’s moniker, “Millennium Resorts,” an intriguing name whose true genesis remains a secret. “‘Resorts’ plays to the 80s synth-wave aesthetic of palm trees and beautiful sunsets and ‘Millennium’ just has a sci-fi “ring” to it.” We hear the term ‘millennium’ a lot, but when you actually look at the definition in a dictionary it's pretty interesting,” explains Scott.

In October, the band released their single “Happiness” from their concept album In The Key of David. “The Big Show” pairs with “Happiness” to showcase the band’s heavy synths, aggressive beats, dreamy/shoegaze guitars, and non-traditional composition choices.

The wonder of “The Big Show” is that it is a piece of a larger puzzle, their concept album. Each song stands alone yet grows in strength in the overall picture.

According to the artist, “I was conscious of the order and the flow of the different pieces from the beginning to end. I have written some screenplays and I kind of approached it like you do when you outline a script.  I think this method worked really well especially with it being a concept album where everything mostly flows together from track to track. But the real magic happened when Jonathan started adding the details and we started to have more of a command over Ableton.”

As for the lyrics, they were written with the intention of having different levels of meaning. “The more shallow inspiration of “The Big Show” comes from watching countless episodes of VH1 behind the music and E True Hollywood story,” tells Scott. “This is very much a concept album, so the lyrics are very connected to the music,” he adds. “A lot of people that have heard the whole use the adjective ‘cinematic.’ I think it’s because there’s this constant conflict in the music between light and darkness and the lyrics mirror that.”

Listeners can look forward to hearing more music from Millennium Resorts shortly. Their single, “The Big Show,” will be followed by the full album release on January 26. The band also looks forward to sharing some content soon to go along with new tracks they are working on. Live performances? Don’t worry—they are also in the works.
