Drake is being trolled by UFC fighter Dricus du Plessis after the OVO rapper bet on his opponent at UFC 305…and lost.
On Saturday (August 17), du Plessis beat Israel Adesanya in the fourth round to retain his middleweight title. The night before, however, Drizzy revealed he’d bet on Adesanya by showing his wager on Instagram and writing, “Always with Izzy [salute emoji].”
The Toronto native has been known to bet on sports throughout his career, and an ongoing narrative is that he curses whichever team/player he bets on – which du Plessis jokingly noted after his win.
“From the bottom of my heart once again THANK YOU @Drake,” he wrote with a photo of himself holding up a drink and rocking his belt.
Denzel Curry also got in on the jokes, writing, “Drake…. Stop Betting on my favorite fighters.”
Drake doesn’t always get it wrong, though. Earlier this year, he won over $2 million after successfully predicting the winner of Super Bowl LVIII — breaking the dreaded “Drake curse” in the process.
Drizzy placed a $1.15 million bet on the Kansas City Chiefs to beat the San Francisco 49ers in the 2024 Super Bowl, with the 2.04 odds earning him a $2.346 million payout.
The Toronto rapper cited Taylor Swift and her fanbase while sharing the hefty bet on social media, since the singer was dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
“I can’t bet against the swifties @stake,” he wrote in the caption of an Instagram post where he screenshotted his betting slip.
Drake’s allegiance to Swift paid off as the Chiefs went on to beat the 49ers 25-22, with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes winning MVP for the second year running. Per his bet, he pocketed a cool $1.196 million in profit.
After the game, the 6 God posted a video on his Instagram Stories of him celebrating his lucrative win, which apparently involved a plate getting broken in the chaos.
“@stake.eddie thank you see ya when I see ya,” he wrote alongside the video, tagging the co-founder of gambling platform Stake.
The “Drake curse” has become a running joke over the years, with various athletes and sports teams often losing after being supported by the rapper.
For the Super Bowl last year, Drizzy tried his luck at reversing the curse by rooting for the Philadelphia Eagles and wearing the team’s jersey, all the while betting $700,000 on the Kansas City Chiefs to win.
His bet was ultimately successful, resulting in a payout of just over $1.4 million.
