Midwestern rock & roll band, The Jimmy Dixon Group, delivers their latest single, “Peters Pool,” alongside a new album titled The Rough Demos. Their sound is based in rock & roll with the thoughtful, insightful lyricism of the singer-songwriter genre.

Based everywhere from Chicago to Milwaukee, the band is comprised of a handful of musicians with a passion for playing together and sharing their love of music. The moniker, The Jimmy Dixon Group, stems from a love of old Chicago-area blues rock legends. “It’s a nod to the roots of rock & roll, where rock & roll was born,” adds Jimmy Dixon, the band’s frontman.

“We found our passion for playing new music a little later than other aspiring musicians,” shares Jimmy Dixon, highlighting the maturity of their sound. “We managed to find each other as time rolled by. We really loved the process of taking a song together from Point A and watching it grow and evolve, becoming better than it was when it was first introduced to the band.”

The group is a collaborative and egalitarian one—everyone has a say in the creative process. “We constantly bounce ideas off each other and make music we love to play,” they explain. “We want to connect with people who might enjoy the music almost as much as we like to create it.”

When creating new music, each member contributes to the songwriting project with their own ideas. Their new album, The Rough Demos, is a conglomeration of songs they didn’t intend to write yet somehow came together during studio sessions. “We didn’t set out to create the album in the first place. We just went to the studio and said, ‘let’s see what happens, have some fun recording music we would love to listen to ourselves, and hear what it sounds like at the end of the day.’ The joy of playing together might translate to studio recordings.  Or it might not. But translate, it did. “That’s how it came to be,” they add. “A beautiful accident.”

The Jimmy Dixon Group knows their instruments—and which ones are sure to captivate listeners—whether it’s a Gibson Dove acoustic guitar with an unusual tuning or a Gretsch White Falcon prepped to impress.  “Everybody has so much love for the time we have together. No one person demands we do it this way or that way. We bounce ideas off each other and aren’t afraid to make changes or do something different to find the sound we love for that particular song,” shares the group.

The band’s recent single, “Peters Pool,” is a genuine, insightful tune. A predominantly singer-songwriter vibe with rock & roll elements, “Peters Pool” speaks to the softer side of The Jimmy Dixon Group. The single is a nod to another of the group’s inspirations, Nick Drake, who played in alternate tunings.

“We wrote lyrics we thought were impactful and people could identify with,” shares The Jimmy Dixon Group. “It’s about finding who you are and being comfortable in your own skin. The subject seemed to fit with the chord structure and unique tuning we had for the song, so we went for it.”

In the studio, the band added piano to the recording, which was primarily guitar and vocals. While not every musician was featured on the track, it became a song they could all relate to. “We loved it so much, we made it the lead track in the album,” they add.

The Rough Demos features “Peters Pool” and other songs to deliver a mix of rock & roll and singer-songwriter tracks. “We really loved the process of putting these songs down in the studio,” shares the band. “It’s genuine music from genuine people with a love for rock & roll. You’ll hear a mix of both on the album. You’ll hear our blues rock influences on such tracks as “In Thin Air” or “1956”. People can hear and appreciate that. We hope to turn them on to some of our influences, such as Muddy Waters or Willie Dixon, who aren’t in the spotlight as much anymore and discover music that’s levels and levels of beauty beyond what we’re making.”

Following the release of “Peters Pool” and The Rough Demos, The Jimmy Dixon Group looks forward to releasing another album in late 2024 or early 2025.
