Solange is getting candid about the autoimmune disorders she has been quietly struggling with for some years now.
Earlier this model, model and musician Shaun Ross shared a post revealing he’d been battling with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) – an autoimmune disorder that for him was caused by long COVID.
Amid the barrage of support in the comments, Solange revealed she too had been suffering from POTS, as well as two other conditions that are often a comorbidity with it, Sjögren’s syndrome (like POTS, an autoimmune disease) and mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS).
“Sending you so much love and strength Shaun and to everyone in the comments dealing with the overwhelming, confusing, and isolating nature of POTS!” she wrote. “I was diagnosed with POTS, Sjogren’s and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) back in 2018. I completely understand what it’s like to not want your health circumstances to define you. The good folks at @dysautonomiaintl were really an incredible resource for me and I feel really grateful for the spoonie community for holding me down during my times of complete uncertainty! Sending an abundance of love your way!”
With a screenshot of the comment, Shaun then took to X to reflect on how much less visible Solange has been since around the time she said she was diagnosed and pondered whether the disorders were behind her low profile.
“It’s so interesting to look back at Solange in 2017 when she revealed she had pots and to see the slow down and change of career pace,” he said. “I wonder if this came from the rush of tour and everything else. I know that the first time I performed on my 2nd tour was when it truly hit me hard like a switch.”
Though she may have slowed down a bit, Solange has by no means stopped working and earlier this year, she revealed she’s moving in a different direction for her new music.
“The tuba,” she told Harper’s Bazaar when asked about what sounds she was obsessed with the most.
“I love it. I’ve started writing music for the tuba, and I am trying to talk myself into releasing it, but I can only imagine the eye rolls from people being like, this bitch hasn’t made an album,” she continued.
This wouldn’t be the first time that the R&B singer would be known for shifting gears in her musical style.
Back in 2022, Solange received props from her older sister when she made her debut as a ballet composer at the New York City Ballet Fall Fashion Gala.
Beyoncé took to her Instagram page to salute her younger sibling for the performance, which took place in September of that year. Solange became the first Black woman to serve as a ballet composer for the New York City Ballet, an achievement her family celebrated.
“My beloved sister, there are no words to express the pride and admiration I have for you,” the “Break My Soul” singer wrote. “You are a visionary and one of one. Congratulations on being the first African American woman to compose for the New York City Ballet. The piece you composed is phenomenal. I love you deep. Might I suggest you don’t f*** with my sis.”
