When Georgia Starnes found it difficult to limit herself to just one genre, she came up with a new way to describe her sound: glitter soul. And the Texas native, who’s currently competing on “The Voice,” will showcase her vocal talent and some influences from home on her new single “You and I.”

“My life is just kind of crazy,” says Starnes, who graduated from a renowned performing arts high school in Dallas and then moved to Los Angeles to pursue music and modeling. “I’m doing a lot of things right now. I’m about to release the new song and do a release party for that. I’ve been performing live and going to modeling castings, submitting auditions and also making money working at a restaurant and bartending, all of it. It’s a lot. It’s fun. It’s an adventure.”

Starnes, now 22, says she’s coming back to her roots with the November 15 release of her new single.

“I’ve been living in LA now for a few years and as much as I’ve enjoyed the new scenery, I think I will always have my roots in Texas and it’s a sound you will probably hear in this song,” Starnes says. “It’s not in-your-face country, but it has the southern rock influence like Kings of Leon, Chris Stapleton and Ryan Adams.”

As for her “glitter soul” sound, it’s a phrase she came up with when she was 15 and she’s just kept saying it. Starnes is finding her lane right now, she says, while also still figuring things out.

“I think the beautiful thing with glitter soul is it encompasses all of the different genres that come together as one for me, which include pop, R&B, soul, rock, country and it’s just like a sweet, sultry mix,” Starnes says. “That’s glitter soul. Glitter is the bright and the pop and the soul is more R&B and that type of vibe.”

As she’s gotten older, Starnes has gravitated to a more stripped down sound, but she says she’ll always be evolving. Her appearance on “The Voice” has had a huge impact and has shown her she’s on the right path.

“It’s confirmed things I already believed to be true but to hear it and see it happen and have the validation and confirmation from professionals in the field that I aspire to be in, it’s just very reassuring for me as an artist to keep pursuing and go harder than ever and really dial in,” Starnes says.

The feedback and advice from coaches Snoop Dogg, Reba McEntire, Gwen Stefani and Michael Bublé has helped Starnes to define her artistry, she says.

“What I took away from it is to make sure I’m staying true to myself when I’m releasing original music and so that’s what I’ve been doing more than ever.”

Starnes’ new release is a powerful, emotional song to get listeners through a hard or lonely time by offering a glimpse of hope. In “You and I,” she’s talking about her relationship with her gift of singing, something that’s carried Starnes her whole life and given direction. The lyrics aren’t quite so specific, giving listeners a chance to interpret it for themselves.

“Regardless, it’s just a beautiful stripped back indie pop acoustic song that will speak for itself,” Starnes says. “The vocals are just raw and it’s not overly produced and it has real instruments which is really, really exciting.”

Starnes will host a release party November 14 at Desert 5 in Hollywood where she’ll perform the new single and others. She’s still appearing on “The Voice,” too, and says stay tuned for more live performances and new music in the near future.
