BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award winner Megan Henwood chatted to me about her life since winning this acclaim and about her album “Making Waves”.

This music is not the sort of pop/ indie that Mumford and Sons play - it’s a brooding melodic and upbeat version of old school folk. Megan is an intelligent lyricist with well executed arrangements. Her album features an assortment of folk geniuses including Peter Knight from Steeleye Span. If you’re unsure of that one, ask your folks or someone from the 70’s - they were a big reason for the British folk revival. Your Dad is probably hiding one of their T-shirts in his draw.

Don’t start thinking of the folk stereotypes though as Megan is far from beardy and tree hugging. This is contemporary folk music and her music is described as “rooted in folk tradition but by no means bound by it”. For such a young artist, there is much depth to her work and in person, she is a very self-effacing character with bundles of presence.
