FreshMusicWorld: Who are your biggest musical influences?
Alex Luna: My musical influences are quite diverse. I’m deeply inspired by the romantic emotion in Camilo Sesto’s music. I also love the bachatas by Leonardo Paniagua. In country music, I admire artists like Alan Jackson and Toby Keith. When it comes to traditional merengue, I really enjoy the music of El Grupo de Ahora. And of course, the songs of Juan Luis Guerra have always motivated me with their powerful messages and uplifting rhythms.
FreshMusicWorld: What non-musical influences (books, movies, art, etc.) inspire your work?
Alex Luna: One of my biggest non-musical influences is the Bible, which gives me spiritual guidance. I’m also inspired by the book Decide to Be Happy by Milton López, which is full of God’s love and positive energy. I also admire athletes, especially runners and cyclists, for their discipline and how they take care of their bodies.
FreshMusicWorld: Is there a particular song or album that has significantly influenced your career?
Alex Luna: Yes, one particular song that has had a big impact on my career is “Ojalá Qu Llueva Café” by Juan Luis Guerra. It’s a song about agriculture, but for me, it brings hope and faith to keep moving forward in life.
FreshMusicWorld: How do your personal experiences shape your music?
Alex Luna: My personal experiences have been a huge part of shaping my music. Through the ups and downs, I’ve learned valuable lessons and used them to write meaningful songs. I’ve encountered wonderful people and others who taught me hard lessons. All of that has helped me create music with depth, emotion, and authenticity.
FreshMusicWorld: Have your influences changed over the years?
Alex Luna: My core musical influences haven’t changed much, but I’ve definitely added new ones along the way. Many new artists have emerged with incredible talent. Some of the artists that influence me today include Santiago Cruz, Joe Veras, Farruko, Ricardo Arjona, and Carlos Vives. They’ve all inspired different aspects of my music.
FreshMusicWorld: How do you incorporate your cultural background into your music?
Alex Luna: I bring my cultural roots into my music with the goal of spreading joy and making people dance to the rhythm of merengue. I use authentic sounds that reflect where I come from, and I aim to lift the spirits of everyone who listens to my songs. I want my music to be uplifting, not only for the body but also for the soul.
FreshMusicWorld: What role does nature or your environment play in your songwriting?
Alex Luna: Nature plays a huge role in my creative process. It gives me fresh ideas and extraordinary inspiration. Being surrounded by nature brings me peace, joy, and calm. A deep breath in a natural setting can heal my soul and refresh my mind. Nature helps me view the world in a more beautiful way and contributes to the development of all my compositions.
FreshMusicWorld: When did you first realize you wanted to be a musician?
Alex Luna: I’ve felt connected to music since I was very young, but I clearly realized it during a school event called the Festival de la Voz at my high school in Jicomé, Esperanza. It took place at the nightclub Sonido 82, and I performed “Como Cada Niche Duermo” by Camilo Sesto. I won third place in the first round, and I was overwhelmed with gratitude, hearing the applause and performing with a live band. That moment made me feel like a true professional and confirmed my passion for music.
FreshMusicWorld: What was the first song you ever wrote, and what inspired it?
Alex Luna: The first song I ever wrote is called Camión de Mujeres (Truck of Women). I wrote it while driving a 53-foot trailer. During a short break, I got the inspiration to write a fun and playful song. The idea was to surprise my friends on my birthday by bringing them a truck full of women, just for laughs and celebration.
FreshMusicWorld: How did you get started in the music industry?
Alex Luna: I started in the music industry in the 1990s. My brother Aniel El Guerrero and Pedro Luna were the first to believe in my talent and who I was as a person. They took me to recording studios and supported me however they could. They saw something special in me, and each played an important role. Today, thanks to God, Pedro Luna is still my manager and a key part of my journey.
