In his new throwback track, “A Lil Bit,” positive rapper Ken, The Admin serves up more than a little bit of good vibes. Kicking off with record scratching reminiscent of Grandmaster Flash, the track kicks into gear with bouncy bass and spacey synths.

With sing-songy chants like “Head, shoulders, knees, toes,” and “Go get ‘em, go get ‘em, go,” the track evokes the good-time party atmosphere of early hip hoppers like Run DMC and Curtis Blow.

The new single follows on the heels of the 4-song EP, Spring Conference, released earlier this year. That project showcased Ken’s more relaxed and sophisticated side, with songs like “Do Yo Lil Dance” and “Pose.” That collection was built for late-night drives, cleaning the house, or simply kicking back in peace. These are songs that encourage you to strike a pose, “do your little dancey dance,” and generally have a good time and feel good.

The new single, “A Lil Bit,” dives into summer fun, borrowing from 1980s rap and R&B with its scratches, basslines, and playful energy. Ken says that when he made the song, he was envisioning people swimming in pools, jumping around having fun, and getting ready for football season. Pure end of summer vibes.

Ken, The Admin isn’t your average rapper. By day, he’s a healthcare administrator. He first started making beats in the early days of COVID, when lockdowns left him with extra time and a desire to try something new. What began as a hobby in GarageBand quickly evolved into full productions in Pro Tools, as Ken discovered his knack for crafting beats and rhymes that feel fresh and positive, open to everyone.

“I wanted to make something anybody could listen to, from kids to elders,” Ken says. “I try to make music that feels fun and purposeful, but also calming. Something that doesn’t take away from your peace.”

His philosophy shapes his style, at the crossroads of hip hop, pop, and R&B. His tracks can be smooth and chill, or upbeat and energetic. Above all, his music is rooted in positivity. As he says, the goal is to create music that feels “sophisticated, purposeful, and fun.”

Next on the horizon, fans should keep a lookout for an upcoming EP planned for this fall, with three or four new tracks that will continue expanding his sound. In the meantime, the artist is testing out open mics and building his niche audience, one song at a time.

With “A Lil Bit,” Ken, The Admin is building off of his previous work with a newer, more playful side. (This playfulness is exemplified in a TikTok video in which he stands in front of a mirror, shirtless, amusingly preening in a wig and sunglasses.) “A Lil Bit” is the kind of track that makes you want to head to the pool, windows down, volume up, remembering that the best hip hop is always about bringing the party and good times.
