Ngufor is a singer and songwriter from Cameroon that has moved to the United States with a goal of performing on big stages. His latest single, “Black Girl Magic” is an homage and celebration of black women. Sitting comfortably in the African dance hall genre, the song is also meant to get people moving. Ngufor wrote “Black Girl Magic” after seeing the disrespect people share too often about the physical appearances of black women. He was inspired to write the song because all the features people were insulting were things he thought were beautiful and should be celebrated. He actually had someone specific in mind when he made the song but the sentiments apply to all black women. “In the song I sing the name ‘Susanna’ because she’s the one who inspired the song. She’s also on the flyer I made for the song. The song applies to the beauty of all black women but she was the direct inspiration for me to write the song.” he said.

The track itself is upbeat yet calming with the steady pace of the percussion making it danceable as the tranquil melody pulses across the track. Ngufor’s layered vocals weave and float around the production as he sings with passion and authenticity.

Music has always been an emotional escape for Ngufor. While he admits academics were never his strong suit, he always could count on music. No matter what emotion he was feeling, he would sing it out from the bottom of his heart. Being able to express himself this way always made songwriting easy for him because he would just express exactly how he was feeling. Ngufor credits the church for laying the foundation for his music. But, it also laid the foundation for his life. Everything he learned there has helped him not only navigate the world of music creation but also life itself. His roots in the church began in Cameroon and he kept all this knowledge in his mind and heart once he moved to the United States.

Ngufor was inspired to come to the United States after dropping his cousins off at the airport in 2006 when they left to come here. Since then, he has always wanted to go and in 2024 he made it happen. Upon arriving in the United States Ngufor learned just how different things were here. Outside of the obvious cultural differences, there were also differences he experienced on a much more personal level.

“Back in Cameroon, when I was growing up, many people thought I was a bad influence and people were advised to avoid me. But, in the United States I was accepted by everyone. I was given more opportunities to express myself and speak up. I had to leave Cameroon and come to the United States to learn that there are places where people will and won’t accept you.” he said. Ngufor’s goals are to transition from small stages to big stages. He’s performed at all sorts of local events, parties and festivals back in Cameroon. He feels like music is his purpose and he wants to continue expressing and sharing that with as many people as he can. He has plans for multiple albums in the future.
