ATLANTA - The artist formerly known as Kanessa is back - new name; new song; new vibe.

Since its release, “Vibe” has collected more than 35k streams on Spotify. The Midwest Madam’s debut single as J. is an energy-packed earworm. The track is guaranteed to attract more attention with its riveting guitar loop and lyrics that cut straight to your heart.

Interestingly, J. says her specific type of hip hop is vibe music. “It takes you to a certain place or gives you a certain feeling - music that you can almost live your life to. Everybody tends to have a certain song that takes them somewhere in a memory or the way you feel in a moment,” said J. “I consider all of that to be vibe music, tracks you can live your life to and walk in the moment.”

After an awakening, J. realized, “I was trying to live off other people’s energy, trying to replicate them. I’m my own flavor, but I was other people’s flavor. At this point, going through those things, coming into myself, accepting certain things about myself, and embracing my own energy is what influences and drives my creativity.

The single “Vibe” is personal to J. The blood cousin (third to be exact) of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Legend, Muddy Waters, J. grew up in the bootheel of Missouri where there were no clear commercial hip hop radio stations. She grew up listening to mainly country and pop on commercial radio in the days before streaming popularity. Those childhood musical memories stayed with her as she moved to Georgia and became immersed in the southern hip-hop scene.

The combination of hip hop and country music prevails in her lyrics and sound, evident in the debut “Vibe.” J. said, “If you listen to the song, you’ll see that I took a whole lot of country songs that I liked and used those titles to make lyrics out of it. I took all these country songs from different moments that I’ve had and their experiences, how I felt in those moments, what I did in those moments, and stepped into my own by creating my energy.”

The “Vibe” music video, shot in Missouri, Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida, includes snapshots of J. with family and friends simply catching the “vibe” and living their best life.

The success J. is experiencing from “Vibe” is not new. When performing as Kanessa, The Midwest Madam landed on the pages of This Is 50, Hip Hop Since1987, Hip-Hop Weekly’s Indie Artist spotlight, and others with her mixtape, “#TurnUpSeason.”

J.’s return to music allows everyone to feel the vibe. As she said, “Your life is each day...your lifetime is a compilation of those days. Life is a journey. This is a portion of my journey, thus-far, first-hand.”

Make sure to stay connected to J. on all platforms for new music, videos, and social posts.
