DALLAS - Hip hop, rap, and African tribal are labels placed on Tago’s music. To him, music is just music, “I catch a vibe and do what I feel. I rap and sing a little bit.”

For seven years, Tago perfected producing but “I got tired of being in the back-end lane after making a beat and sending it the artist,” he said. “I wanted to make the song with the beat and make the placement instead of chasing the placement.”

The chase is over because, on Jan. 21, Tago will drop his first single, “I’m Him,” featuring Sheff G, Doe Boy, and Eli Fross. Tago created the beat, while Sheff G, Doe Boy, and Eli Fross dropped some catchy hooks and powerful rhythms. Tago continued to bring the beat up and sang in the background and added adlibs to the recording.

At the root of the track’s message is empowering black youth. While Tago says the song is about empowerment, it has other messages for listeners. “I’m trying to empower the culture a little bit,” said Tago. “We couldn’t go out on a message that people can’t understand. So, we put it in a language that black youth understand.”

While many artists are using the language of rap to share their message, Tago adds more to his music. Taking inspiration from Wyclef Jean, Terrell, Kanye West, and J. Cole, Tago, a Texas native, spent three years in Africa as a child.

Those formative years had a lasting effect on Tago. The African tribal music he heard then is now prevalent in his vocals and percussion performance. “It influences my music, especially my drums,” said Tago. “The drums help me put things in perspective. When people hear my drums, they know I’m doing something different. It’s the drum movement; it’s the movement of the beats. Usually, I’ll listen to a melody for a long time, and I’ll throw in a bouncy-poppy vibe to make it pop to bring out the beat.”

Looking ahead, Tago said there is a specific purpose behind his artistry. “I want to bring that spark and motivation to inspire. I’m setting a blueprint and paving the way for others to follow,” he stated.

He is doing this by chronicling his journey in a vlog on YouTube. “It shows the story about how I want to go and what it’s taking to get here,” said Tago. He added that he is still in season one and plans to be dropping more YouTube video blogs soon.

Setting his course and standing out among other hip-hop artists, Tago is more than just a producer and performer. He is a visionary who seeks to help others, especially the Black culture. “Most people want faith or some type of that in music. The vision that I’m pushing is fatherhood spirituality and visions,” said Tago.

With a clear path ahead and a desire to help the youth, Tago has begun his journey as a rising hip hop artist by using slick hooks, lyrical rhymes, and tribal drumbeats and patterns.
