“I wanted to be the best I can be / Let my fears and doubts control me / Instead of giving myself the very best / I didn’t work hard enough, I settled for less / Would you walk with me Jesus…”
The brothers originally wrote the song 30 years ago and officially released it in 2014. Now they’ve given new life to the classic with a remastered version and they say now felt like the right time to give the song new life because the lyrics can help people.
“A lot of people are going through a lot of tribulation with family, with their job, with their spouse and with their peers,” says Garry Stewart. “When times get dark, don’t give up. Believe to achieve and see to believe.”
Garry and brother Delbert started their music career in 1975 with the release of “How Far Can Our Love Go” and auditioned for Motown Records legend Hal Davis a year later. In 1981 they teamed up with Shad O’Shea of Counterpart Records tor produce the hit song “Get Down Get Down.”
Later on that decade they released “Family Affair,” which became another Midwest hit after it was played frequently on a Cleveland radio station.
“The DJ was telling his listeners these people are going to go all the way with the right connections,” Delbert recalls.
They were managed by their mother then, and were slated for a four-month tour of Japan. But with their mother in declining health, the brothers decided to stay and she passed away a month later.
“God helped us to overcome a lot of the obstacles,” Delbert says.
While their mother was alive the duo recorded a song called “His Door Is Open.” They updated the song and released it again two years ago and the song quickly blew up. The song went on to win four Midwest Blue Chips Awards, including best inspirational song/video, musical performance song/video and best entertainment song/video.
The song was even selected by the Prague International Indie Film Festival to be included in the 2022 festival.
The brothers’ success and career resurgence is due in part to their timeless sound, which mixes the old school with the new school. Delbert says their music shares some similarities with the Jackson 5, and Garry describes it as “a little pop, a little jazz fill and some R&B all mixed together.”
“It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been doing something,” Delbert says. “As my father once said, you’re only a failure when you stop trying. My brother and I have been doing this since 1975 and we’ve seen a lot of groups come and go and by the grace of God we’re still here.”
“We get along well together, we pray together,” Garry says. “We keep ourselves focused and grounded and humble. Putting God first then family and then try to help out others around our community.”
The Cincinnati-based artists are planning to release a new song called “Stand” in the next few months. It’s an up-tempo track with very positive lyrics, they say.
