LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Some of singer/songwriter chrysifloga’s music can definitely be placed in the nu-metal genre with its piercing screams and red-hot distortion guitar sounds, but just when it seems you have him pinned down, he puts out a tune with the melody and sound of a pop song.

“When it comes to ‘Creep,’ I just connect to the song because I think it’s a really psychotic song and that’s how I interpret it,” chrysifloga said. “There are a lot of times when I want to talk to someone and I just don’t know how to say it so I develop coping mechanisms for social situations. It’s a kind of a desperation I guess so in interpreted it in a darker way. I did my version of the Radiohead song during a show and Vicky Hamilton, who is my distributor right now, she saw me do that version in my one interpretation with growls and stuff and she said she liked it. We decided to release it.”

The single and a music video came out under Hamilton’s boutique record label Dark Spark Music.

Listening to this Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter and producer, one cannot miss hearing a sense of the occult.

Exuding a mysterious personality behind dramatic dark washed-out lipstick and eyeshadow, chrysifloga’s silent confidence and subtle charm immediately takes center stage.

Surprisingly gentle and soft-spoken off stage and studio, one can’t help but sense an unpredictable polarity from his intense look and sound.

“People always find ways to stay relevant in societal norms,” chrysifloga said. “But there are those who struggle with it. That’s a big part of my music. It’s not defined. Humans change all the time, so how do you expect to define anything?”

A melancholic piano line in a minor key sets the mood immediately after hitting the play button on “Creep,” promptly layered by a chilling vocal introduction. The chorus drops with red-hot distortion guitars, featuring guitarist Xander Gambini, as the artist unapologetically takes listeners into the upside-down, guiding them into the song’s climax with heavy growls and fiery screams.

“Where I'm coming from is a kind of desperation,” chrysifloga said. “I’m comfortable being a complete psycho.”

He plans to release an album called “Burn Me Alive,” in the coming months. To give the public a taste of what’s coming, he’s released three songs on Soundcloud, including the title track, “Burn Me Alive.”

“I want people to know that not everyone is meant for the light,” chrysifloga said. “A lot of people can find themselves in darkness. Sometimes you’ve got to break yourself to be renewed and reborn. You've got to go in whatever direction and you’ve got to go hard. You can’t go halfway, you’ve got to go all the way.”

The artist recently adopted his stage name, chrysifloga, which is the English spelling of a Greek word meaning golden flame.

“I don’t really know where to place myself, but when I write I'm not really thinking about oh, this should be this genre of metal or whatever,” chrysifloga said. “I just write and it comes out like that. I think there’s a lot of pop appeal to it as well. When I did my shows in LA there were people coming up to me and they told me, hey dude, I don’t even listen to metal but somehow I can listen to your stuff and I can relate to it.”
