Packing a musical punch with clever lyrics and masterful delivery, Step is an artist to be watched over the next few months. The rapper has collected accolades across the industry for his early work and is gearing up for the release of a new project in 2023 called “Nothing Lasts Forever.”

“I write lyrical rap in a sense,” shares Step regarding his musical style. “But not too lyrical—I combine elements and bridge the gap between sending a message and having good quality lyrics. Music that’s easy on the ears.”

While Step’s primary focus is rap, he also enjoys singing now and then. Inspired by Drake’s earlier work, Step focuses on bridging lyrics with elements that soften his sound, creating music that isn’t “too heavy on the ears.” “I experiment with melodies and sing as well,” shares Step of his creative process. He tends to work exclusively with two producers when working on new music. They send Step beats, which he then listens to in order to get a sense of what to write. “If I feel a spark of creativity from that, I’ll write lyrics down. If I listen to the beat in the studio, I’ll try to punch in the lyrics as they come to me.”

A former starting point guard and team captain for the University of Hawaii basketball team, Step graduated in 2019 with a degree in Political Science and swiftly made his way into a career in music. Born in Philadelphia, Step is now back on the East Coast, immersing himself in the music scene of New York City. After moving to New York City in 2020, Step began collaborating with like-minded people including sound engineers, producers, and songwriters. “I focused on getting better at music and doing it more consistently after moving to New York,” shares Step.

Over the past few years, Step has released multiple singles, EPs, and an album, all of have been well received. His work is a reflection of his life and explores the highs, lows, and all of the moments in between.

In 2021, Step released the EP Pure Intentions, which was followed by the 2022 release of Night Drive Convos. How is his newest album different than previous ones? “Now I have more experience under my belt,” shares Step. “I’ve been working on this upcoming album close to two years and took all of the positives and negatives from the first release to create it. It still sounds like me—the same approach. Only more calculated and well rounded. It’s a better quality product overall of people who listen to my music to enjoy.”

For those who can’t wait until his album release, don’t worry. Step will be teasing its release with a single or two in the next few months.
