Inviting listeners to understand his music, Benji Casino isn’t afraid to share his songwriting process. “When it comes to ‘Mm Mm Mm,’ I was going through Beat Stars and heard the beat. My sound selection has to captivate me. A lot of musicians, composers, and producers make the same type of beat. Every song sounds the same. In it a sense it follows the major influencers in the industry—everything sounds the same on the beat side. So I heard this beat, and it was different—it captivated me—as soon as I heard it, I thought ‘let me see what I can do.’”
“I was trying to find my sound on the right songs and one day went to the studio. My friend said, ‘bro, you gotta stop writing songs. You gotta make these songs like you’ve already made it.’ So we started free styling in the studio and came up with a good song,” explains Benji Casino. “I realized going into the studio with no intentions—nothing planned out—is better. 9/10 times that’s when you get an authentic, hit song. When you freestyle a song in the studio and work on it without any type of structure or plan, you get a fully spontaneous song. That’s how ‘Mm Mm Mm’ was made.”
In a similar vein to “Mm Mm Mm,” the beat of “Moon Walking” can best be described as alluring, drawing the listener into Benji Casino’s strong lyrical delivery. In order to write “Moon Walking,” Benji Casino took a different approach. “I was out all night and partying. When I got home, I couldn’t sleep. I was going through Beat Stars when I heard the beat and thought ‘let me see what I can do.’ And I wrote the whole song that night—both verses were finished in a couple of hours.”
Benji Casino’s end game isn’t fame—it’s understanding. “I want people to listen to my songs and understand me a little better as an artist. At the end of the day, they’re going to hear what they’re going to hear. Like songs I listen to today that I discovered 5-6 years ago and just realized what the artist was talking about. Sometimes you just hear it how you want to hear it. You’re entitled to your opinion. When it comes to the message, for me it’s about expression.”
From table drumming as an elementary school student to making music professionally, Benji Casino has come a long way in his musical journey. “I make music because I love making music. I don’t care about being famous. I’m not going to lie about my life to try to appeal and appease other people. I’m telling you how I happen to be.”
This year, Benji Casino is focused on promoting his recent releases, including a full-length project and EP that are already available for streaming.
