OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — For the past 10 years, DJ Wayneindisthang has been one of the hottest and most sought after DJs in Oklahoma.
Now he’s taking his chance to do more than just play other people’s music by producing music of his own in the form of a new single, “Slide” with Super Jay and Si’Yir.
Wayneindisthang said he received strong support from his label, Good Credit Records, to make this move.
“So Tracy Dillard who’s my manager and the CEO of my company, he and Roy Thurston, a founder, they hit me up and was saying you should do a song,” Wayneindisthang said. “They said we would support you, we’ll get behind you. They set up a deal with a producer in a studio. They sent me a couple of beats, then they sent me this Slide beat. It had a different beat. The melody was the same but the beat was different. I changed it and arranged it the way I thought was dope and we got in the studio and we went.”
Wayne compared making the single, “Slide” to making gumbo.
“I sent it originally to Super Jay and said give me a concept and he came back with something that said slide but it was different,” Wayne said. “We took that concept to the studio, me and Si’Yir and she starts writing her beat and it started coming out like Gumbo. Slide is gumbo, someone brought the rice, someone brought the broth, someone brought the shrimp, and it was a combinations of a lot of different ideas and a lot of people putting their inputs into it.”
Wayneindisthang said the song doesn’t have a real message as much as it is a feeling.
“This song is something everyone can enjoy, people from the ages of 12 or even younger all the way up to 65 and older,” Wayneindisthang said. “That was the reason we put the song together. And the song is saying if you want me to pull up, I'll be there, I’ll fly. If you need a friend, if you need someone to have your back, that’s what I’m here for. That’s the concept and the idea.”
The song was released earlier in June and Wayne said it felt different being the musician instead of the guy behind the turntables.
“I love it. I think that I’ll finally get the recognition that I’ve deserved for all of these years,” Wayne said. “I think people take way more seriously someone who’s an artist.
“With DJing, everybody loves you because you’re just playing the hottest songs from other people. When it’s your music, some people like you and some people don’t. It’s like I’ve got to start over. I’ve got a great support system that I’m sure a lot of local artists would love to have.
But at the same time I do feel like I'm starting over. It’s all brand new because I don’t have the audience. On Instagram I've got 32,000 followers. On Spotify I’ve got 30 followers, so there’s a big transition of being humbled.”
