Rapper SK Glizzii released his new single, “I Need Somebody,” reminding listeners that it’s okay to not be okay. The soothing song brings relief to anyone who has ever felt alone or in need of support.

“I Need Somebody” is the product of processing a difficult time in SK Glizzii’s life. “I wrote the song while I was locked up facing a murder charge. During those two years in lockdown, I was fighting for my freedom. I needed somebody,” shares the rapper. “I lost my mother during that period, as well as two best friends. So, this song means more to me than any other song. It’s a release for me. I get to tell my story and let people know it’s okay to need someone and want someone. It’s okay to feel your pain. No matter your circumstance or story, we’re all still going through pain. And it’s okay to need somebody to listen.”

Writing the single came naturally to SK. “It started as a melody in my head, and then the words came. I remember waking up in my cell with a melody. When I came home, it was the first song I recorded. I just came into the studio and spit out the harmony. Then we got down on the beat and made a masterpiece,” SK explains of the writing and recording process.

SK Glizzi’s passion for music began at an early age at his family’s church. According to the artist, “my mother was a pastor, and I was in the choir at a very young age. I grew up in music. My whole family does it. I feel like I’m birthed in music.” Despite an upbringing rich in music, it wasn’t until SK returned from prison that he began taking his music more seriously.

“When they dropped all charges, it felt like a second chance. I felt like, now let’s take this serious. I also got the opportunity to be a part of Way2Real. Tony (Tony Haire, PhD) taught me that you can do this. He’s been teaching me how to be a man and a king in the world, not just in music. It was a real eye opener for me.”

“Way2Real is about helping those who want to be helped—letting them know they’re not alone when they feel alone,” explains SK. “We’re focused on being kings and the best you can be in life, plus more. Reach new heights, above and beyond in everything in life, not just in music. And sticking to each other like family and giving a hand to those who need help.”

Tony Haire, PhD, adds to SK’s portrayal of Way2Real, “We are focused on teams and decreasing youth violence, as well as mental and behavioral health needs. Everyone who is involved has come out of something. Our objective is to get involved in our community, the City of Fayetteville. We’re building a large center for teen youth and their families so they can get the services they need. We also have a two-year contract with the school system to work with youth. Our artists all come from that place, so they can show what it looks like to succeed. The future is within them—all they have to do is pursue it.”

“I Need Somebody” is part of a larger project that will be shared with the public in the near future. “We’re still putting the album together,” shares SK. He’s also getting ready to tour. As larger opportunities are on the horizon, SK Glizzii is able to take a step back and realize how far he has come. “I’m still growing as an artist. I’m just blessed and thankful for this opportunity. I’m humbled and grateful.”

His greatest hope is that listeners feel supported and heard through his music. “I want listeners to know I’m here. I’m a shoulder you can cry on and lean on. It’s okay to go through it. It’s okay to fight. It’s okay to sit there and know ‘I need help.’ We all need somebody. It’s okay to reach the hand that reaches out to you.”
