Los Angeles-based pop rock band, Sensaround, dropped their new single, “Valley Of Grey,” a sentimental record to be enjoyed by all.
Sensaround is comprised of Bob Dougherty (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Alexander Track (drums, backing vocals), Nate Gignac (guitar, backing vocals), and Maxwell Pierce (bass, backing vocals), four seasoned musicians who pride themselves on creating and performing meaningful music. From striking melodies to captivating chord progressions, the band captivates audiences with musical mastery and connection. “Valley Of Grey” is the latest addition to their impressive musical catalogue.
Simple with notes of complexity, “Valley Of Grey” is a strong pop rock record that can be enjoyed by vast audiences. The single begins with a robust instrumental opener before launching straight into thoughtful lyrics.
“I wrote the song when I was on vacation on the east coast with my parents,” shares Bob Dougherty of Sensaround. “I vowed I would write a song about my grandfather (and best friend). We spoke every day for the last eight years of his life. The song is about my grandfather’s guidance and unwavering love for me.”
“I was playing around on a spare acoustic I keep at my parents’ house and found the right chord progressions and started hammering away on the lyrics. When I finished writing it, I submitted the demo to Alex, and he came back with modifications until we created a song we felt rocked. Then we brought in our guitar player and bass player,” adds Dougherty.
While the song itself is incredibly personal to Dougherty, the lyrics are designed to be open ended. “When I’m at an open mic or venue and hear other artists present material, my ears are sensitive to whether or not a song is universally relatable. When it’s too personal, as a listener, I can pinpoint to who it’s about and why. I feel like sometimes it’s too much of an overshare, like reading his/her diary out loud,” explains Doughtery. “With all our songs, I go out of my way to write ones that are sincere and authentic without being too personal in a way that is not relatable. We want other people to imagine their story, to see their lives in our song. We want all our songs to provide an appropriate feeling of angst or joy but also serve as a score for listeners’ own lives.”
The band is committed to wholesome, thoughtful pop music. Dougherty’s pet peeve is when musicians casually throwing expletives in music where they contribute little to the message. “They’re unnecessary in today’s pop music,” he adds. “Why is it so widely acceptable? If you’re emphasizing a point in a conversation, fine. But otherwise, it tends to cheapen a song. If you’d be uncomfortable playing it to your grandparents, you might want to reconsider your approach.”
“Our lyrics are artful and not specific to modern-day living,” he adds. “Our songs are meant to be timeless; we want them to be relevant in 10, 15 years. Contemporary music has veered away from the traditional pop rock we play. I hope listeners will sense a range in our song that is not prevalent in music as it used to be and that they like that.”
Instead of dividing their music into separate albums and EPs, Sensaround has a catalogue that acts as a collection of their current music. “It’s one big pile of work we’re proud of,” shares Dougherty. In addition to their music, the band has a lyric video available online for “Valley Of Grey.”
