Jimmy Mallia has written songs about his past dating life, his past alcoholism and other moments in his life. But, with this release, he wanted to get sentimental and talk about someone who’s near and dear to his heart: his Mom. His mother is still alive and he wanted to write a song for her that she could hear and appreciate for herself. He wrote “Bye Bye Mamma” upon reflecting on the passing of his Dad and acknowledging the fact that his Mom would one day pass away too. But, the song comes from a place of reverence and admiration - not sadness.

“It felt cathartic. I wanted to be able to express what she means to me and the people around her.” he said.

Like many of Jimmy’s songs, he hopes that with his vulnerability being shared, others will identify with it and the sentiments he expresses will resonate with them. As a songwriter who brands himself on honesty, sharing lyrics that tell his life story is something he strives for with every release. Throughout other releases, the lyrics tell his own life story but with this release, he talks about how his mother’s presence in his life had an impact. Still, he hopes that with that, other people reflect on the impact their mothers have had on their own lifes through a positive lens.

“I think we tend to take the traits and good things we learned by example we learned from our parents for granted sometimes. I hope it touches people…I’d be thrilled if it played at every mother’s funeral.” he said.

Jimmy’s songs don’t have a set genre in his eyes but if they had to have one, he’d place them in the country/americana lane. When listening to “Bye Bye Mamma” the song’s melody sits right in the space of being somber and reflective. His rich and deep vocals are strong as he extends notes to emphasize the emotional reflection of his lyrics. Other sounds, like keys and strings, come in subtly as the track continues, putting the listener in a mindstate of approbation for their own mothers. With lyrics that tie in imagery to emotional sentiments, Jimmy paints a picture of what his final moments with his mother would be like. It’s a musical journey that offers hope to the ones that remain on Earth once she leaves as they keep her memories and morals alive.

For Jimmy Mallia, writing the songs is the part of making music that comes fairly easy to him. But, what stands out about him is the fact he is the only songwriter for his songs. In 2024, collaboration is the name of the game in the music industry but for Jimmy, writing a song with someone else for him takes away a certain creative freedom - both technically and in a sentimental sense.

“Personally, I think it would be very hard to co-write a song. I admire people who do it. What I do is coming from a very, very internal place in my gut, heart and soul. If I were to do that with someone else I would have to be very in sync with them.” he said.

Jimmy’s commitment to authentically vulnerable songwriting shines radiantly throughout every moment of this song. With multiple song releases under his belt at this point, there’s certain confidence that comes with releasing music for him now. He knows what he’s capable of and he knows that he wants people to connect with the stories he tells. Those stories come from a variety of life’s moments and for this release, it’s about someone who has been there his entire life.

“She’s been a part of every stage of my life. She raised me and now she’s seen me raise my own children. Throughout all my difficult times she’s been what you hope a mother is: Always supportive. Always there.”
