G Thrilla is coming for the music industry, and he’s coming from Canarsie, in Brooklyn, New York, and his calling card is a gritty rap track called “When It Start,” the lead single from his debut EP, When Did It All Begin.

All three tracks are based on life.

“I got a story to tell, like, me growing up in Canarsie, growing up in the hood,” he said. “In ‘When It Start,’ basically, I’m letting people know how it began, in a little way letting people know how certain things begin, how certain things were in my hood, and me growing up, me facing certain challenges.”

When did it all begin when did it all start
Ima tell u what I’m part
Ima tell you what I’m not
I ain’t gon say what we did
I ain’t gon say who I burnt

The song has a heavy street rap beat and G Thrilla’s deep voice and fluid flow riding on a chiming melody as he goes through the story of the beginnings of a man named Samuel’s evolution into G Thrilla, rapper, musical artist.

Samuel’s artist name and his musical inspiration come from the same source, Michael Jackson and his album and video Thriller.

“The reason why I call myself Thrilla is Michael Jackson and Thriller,” he said. “That’s where the concept came from, because it was one of my favorite songs when I was growing up. I just love that name, and the video, and the concept of the cemetery — people coming back from the dead. All that interested me — I’m like, ‘I’m a Thriller kind of guy.’”

The G comes from the street and life, as in his description for “When It Start”:

“In the song you can hear certain things I’m talking about, like certain things I go through, how I’m going to respond to certain stuff, like how I been responding, how I been treated.”

“G” stands for gentleman, gangsta, genuine, “all the powerful G meanings.”

“Just standing on who you got to be, you know?”

And they are all reflected in his announcement of intent.

“‘When It Start,’ I’m trying to let people in the industry know how I’m coming. I’m just letting them know I’m here, and I got heat for you to listen to.”

Ad-libs are a background feature of his music. Behind his rap, and along with it, he adds comments, embellishments, emotions.

“I like people to actually hear me and understand me, understand what’s going on.”

Certain things, he said, can be spoken or rapped, but in all three tracks of “When Did It All Begin” you can hear his ad-libs, comments, laughing, sometimes repeating in a different tone a word or two from the lyrics.

It is a way of making the rap like real life, because the rap is him on a stool with a microphone, but the ad-libs add a natural feel.

“I don’t let them keep all of that, but I’ll tell them don’t take certain things out. They are hearing it like it starts from scratch.”

He has been making music for about 10 years, since he was 17 or so. In the beginning, he did not take it all that seriously, even though people in Canarsie and Brooklyn were telling him he should put music out, just to get it out.

“People were telling me to just throw my music out there. But I didn’t, and not because I didn’t have money, not because I wasn’t motivated. I feel like this is my time right now to put out my energy, to put out my music.”

But, during all that time, he was making music. He has all that music “tucked away.” “When It Start” and When Did It All Begin are just the opening to his career.

“There’s more projects to come, because I’m not resting now. In a couple of months, they’re going to get the next project. After that, we just want to go crazy, but at this point we have this one, but expect a lot of heat from me.”
