New York-based singer and songwriter, Celia Zane, commiserates with listeners in her latest single, “Headache.” The track showcases her versatile sound which incorporates elements of hip hop, soul, opera, EDM, and pop—as well as Chinese and American influences—to immerse listeners in an unforgettable auditory experience.

Born in China, Celia Zane connected with music from a young age. “Since I was a child, I loved music, singing, dancing…all of it together. My parents were very supportive since the beginning. I grew up singing Chinese music including opera and musicals. I also danced to Chinese music,” adds Celia. The young musician went on to compete in singing and dancing. It was then she began to think she may have a shot in music.

Motivated by the feedback she received by professionals during her competitions, Celia Zane continued working on her voice and craft. She expanded her repertoire to contemporary music, which she always felt spoke to her. While everyday pop (e.g., Avril Lavigne, Taylor Swift) are among her favorites, it’s the classic contemporary artists that Celia Zane has been passionate about lately: Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, James Brown, and more.

Celia Zane continued her musical journey to a few years of studying at Berklee College of Music. Combining her professional training with passion for exploration, the artist has been concocting a sound of her own along the way. “Now I’m living in New York, writing songs, singing, and trying to make a living in music,” shares Celia. Living in a fast-paced environment can sometimes feel lonely, which is why Celia found herself writing music throughout the pandemic to quell the sadness.

During those COVID days, she found herself facing a constant pressure and pain—the sensation of an endless headache. “I thought about the situations where everyone faces these feelings. It’s the weak spots and soft spots and emotions that connect us together,” tells Celia.

It was this inspiration that led to the creation of “Headache.” “I write almost every day. One moment, I was humming a hook and thought ‘this is a catchy melody to make a song.’ I envisioned how I wanted the song to turn out. It was written on the spot in the studio thanks to my producer. We worked on it very fast—within 30 minutes we were done,” shares Celia.

Celia Zane believes in the power of connection—both through music and openness with one another. “I feel like every kind of emotion and feeling has values and meanings to share with people. People shouldn’t be ashamed of their feelings when they feel a certain way. When they’re depressed or alone or stressed. They are reasons to connect with people. We should be true to ourselves to do what we want to do.”
