IOWA CITY-Alt-rock one-man-band (for now) Cherry Hill brazenly uncorks the unhinged thoughts many bottle up in his brand new single, “When the Bombs Start Dropping, available on all streaming platforms. The recent track follows nine months after the Iowa-based musician dropped his debut banger, “do you wanna get out of here.”

Cherry Hill emerges into 2024 with this languid tune encompassing sorrowful guitars and percussion that almost has a militant feel. He croons that things could be simpler if the rapidly languishing world got a dose of the apocalypse netizens prophesize. The uber-talented rising rockstar and his producer create a more immersive and realistic atmosphere to “When the Bombs Start Dropping” by adding sound effects like an anchorman breaking news, a crowd going ballistic in a city, and a gun going off to enhance the ambiance.

“I wrote [When the Bombs Start Dropping] last winter, and it was kind of just going through this period where I was in a stressful place,” says Cherry Hill. “I was looking around at how things were…I’m just feeling like this kind of sucks. Every time you’re turning on the news, there’s always bad news…no matter what channel you turn to, everyone is upset about something, and everything’s always going wrong. Wouldn’t it be a little bit simpler if that apocalypse everyone’s always warning of actually did happen?”

Born on May 8, 2003, Cherry Hill’s (né Jack Goedken) music journey began when his father gave him a bass guitar at age 10 or 11. His releases carry a ‘90s and ‘00s alternative rock impression, which is attributable to his father, who took him to a Cage the Elephant concert.

Shortly after, Goedken began playing bass in a middle school cover band he formed with a neighbor and a friend. He later fronted a band that composed original music, featuring his brother on electric guitar and a friend on drums. Although these projects eventually ended, Goedken continued to pursue music—drawing inspiration from his most prominent influences like Blink-182, Cage the Elephant, and the Pixies—and learning multiple instruments while writing his own material.

In addition to composing his original music, Goedken has performed live for Iowa audiences at venues including the Yacht Club in Iowa City, which closed during the pandemic; the Ideal Theater in Cedar Rapids, IA; and Kohlmann Park in Waverly, IA. Goedken says his motivation to keep making music stems from the desire to express himself and the hope that listeners will connect with his message.
