Artist Spotlight: Randy Ross
Country singer-songwriter Randy Ross is inviting listeners into a world of fleeting nights, barroom bonds, and bittersweet reflection with his latest track, “A Good Night.” Born and raised in Phoenix, AZ, and now based in Nashville, TN, Ross has built a career on songs that speak to the many sides of life, love, hardship, and happiness, all set against a vintage honky-tonk soundtrack. His new single stands as one of his most personal and universally resonant works yet.
We caught up with Randy Ross to explore the moments that defined their sound — and the vision that drives their next chapter.
FreshMusicWorld: What’s a personal achievement outside of music that you’re particularly proud of?
Randy Ross: My batting average was over .400 the last two seasons in the Nashville Sandlot Baseball League after a 15-year hiatus from competitive baseball.
FreshMusicWorld: What role do family and friends play in your life and career?
Randy Ross: Mostly my friends and family are to thank for keeping me from going crazy. The Nashville grind will definitely take its toll on anybody, so it’s good to be able to have conversations with family and close friends that just completely take your mind off it.
FreshMusicWorld: How do you manage stress and maintain mental well-being?
Randy Ross: The last few years, I’ve learned to manage stress by leaning into my hobbies. Whether the main source of stress is related to music or something personal, getting out on a baseball field, golf course, or nearby body of water with a fishing pole is a great way to have a little fun, forget about whatever has me down in the dumps, and hopefully put things back in perspective.
FreshMusicWorld: What’s one piece of advice you wish you could give your younger self?
Randy Ross: Listen to other people less, trust your gut more.
FreshMusicWorld: How do you maintain a sense of authenticity in your work and personal life?
Randy Ross: I’ve always thought the easiest way to be authentic is to try not to change who you are too much between your personal life and professional life. Obviously, most of us have some sort of amplified version of ourselves for when we’re performing on stage. I think as long as that person is a real piece of yourself and you’re not trying to become someone totally different every time you perform, then you’re in a prime position to “maintain authenticity”.
FreshMusicWorld: What hobbies or activities help you relax and recharge?
Randy Ross: To be honest, if I’m looking to relax and recharge, I’m probably either sleeping or watching something on TV. If I’m not outside doing something, then I’m probably doing just about nothing inside.
FreshMusicWorld: How do you approach personal growth and self-improvement?
Randy Ross: I’m always looking for ways to grow and better myself. I believe one of the most important things an artist can do for their art is to continue to expand their field of vision and always be looking for ways to get better. Miles Davis said, “It’s not about standing still and becoming safe. If anybody wants to keep creatin,g they have to be about change,” and that’s a standard I try to keep in all areas of my life.
FreshMusicWorld: What are some of your favorite ways to practice self-care?
Randy Ross: My idea of self-care may not be the same as most people. When you’re putting so much energy into music, it’s pretty easy to become physically sedentary, so I try to get active as much as I possibly can. I think it’s important to use my body as much as I can while I’m still somewhat young, and anytime I find myself physically exhausted from something, my mind is usually pretty much at ease.
