Nigerian American psychotherapist, award-winning film director, and producer Tina Rix is taking on the music industry with songs designed to heal and help others. The musician and advocate has overcome many trials in life that have led to where she is now—on a continuous journey of self-awareness, healing, growth, and individuality—a path she wants to share with the world through music. “I love myself and understand my story and understand why it’s my story. I want to break that for the next generation,” she tells us.
Tina Rix’s vibe can best be described as a harmony between Afropop, Afrobeat, and R&B, with undertones of spiritual experience, and a grand finale of healing—all interlaced with meaningful lyrics. Her global writing team supports Tina Rix’s vision, helping her emote the messages she wants listeners to hear. “I have to feel something in the music,” says the songwriter of her process. “If I feel like it [the beat] resonates with me and what I’ve been through, then I begin to write to it.”
Tina Rix’s newest single, “Foul Play,” leads the way for her upcoming album scheduled for a June 15 release. The album covers different chapters of Tina Rix’s life, punctuated by difficulties and relatable emotion. “Foul Play” tells the story of self-revelation achieved through ending a toxic long-term relationship. The protagonist decides that she will “let karma take care of him” as she takes the high road and focuses on her goals. By bringing clarity to the role of narcissistic abuse in relationships, Tina Rix advocates for those who have suffered in the same vein.
“Feelings don’t go away when you realize they hurt you,” explains Tina Rix of escaping toxic relationships. “You might end up with someone else who’s wounded because it feels familiar, especially when you’ve dealt with transactional love from a young age.” What’s the cure to moving onward and upward from a lifetime of trauma? “Stop. Admit everything. Heal and love yourself more.”
According to Tina Rix, “happiness is an emotion. I just want to be at peace more so than happy.” Over the years, the artist has developed a close relationship with herself and uses that inner strength to send a message. “I had to remind myself to take off the rose-colored glasses and stop projecting my good qualities on to other people. I was addicted to helping people and seeing good things in people. That’s good for therapy but not for everyday life.” Sharing her story, Tina Rix hopes to prevent others from having to struggle through the situations she has faced.
When referring to her other single, "I'm Winning" Tina had this to say about the meaning behind the song: “Whether it brought your fame or fortune it doesn’t matter—you won. You kept going despite what anyone had to say or think about you. Focus on what you got to get done and do it—even if no one else is clapping for you.”
Up next for the songstress is an album launch party live from London’s Gigi’s Hoxton in the trendy Shoreditch neighborhood. “London has a lot of love.” The global artist is excited to expand her fanbase across continents and keep doing what makes her happy. “Keep your heart in the right place. It’ll all come together.”
