Punk rapper, Dead Hendrix, continues to surprise listeners with his latest single, “Mustang,” featuring Yungcudii. The 21-year-old artist from Ottawa, Canada—also known as Hendi—is making waves in the local music scene with his blend of punk rock and rap.

Dead Hendrix strives to write authentically as he turns his experiences of personal struggle, heartbreak, and drug abuse into relatable music. “My music has attitude. It’s aggressive but smooth,” shares Dead Hendrix.

“Mustang,” his popular new single, was destined to capture audiences. Working with a producer from Russia, Pretty Punks, the artist transformed the beat into an unexpected mix of rap and punk.

To write music, Dead Hendrix typically finds a beat he connects with and drives around until the melodies and lyrics come to him. “Sometimes I don’t really know what the song’s about or what it means until I record and play it back,” adds the artist. “Mustang” evolved similarly, starting with a “badass hook” and incorporating authentic lyrics.

When Yungcudii—who Dead Hendrix went to high school with before he became a renowned artist—expressed interest in joining, the song came together as it was meant to. “I remember right before I was writing it, I wanted to get Yungcudii on it but I wasn’t sure he would want to be on it because my style is different,” shares Dead Hendrix. Needless to say, the collaboration resulted in a harmonious blend of different styles.

Working with Yungcudii was not only a highlight of creating “Mustang,” it was also a built-in support network. “Throughout the release of the song and progression of the song, he supported it all along the way,” tells Dead Hendrix. “It kind of shined a different light on both of us.”

“The feedback we’ve received is surprising in a way where I knew it was a great song…yet in a city full of people who listen to starlight street rap/gangster rap, I got praise for doing something different,” shares Dead Hendrix. “My punk fans loved it. My rap fans loved it. People who haven’t heard of me before caught on to me. The song put me on a new level of being the artist I was looking to be.”

“I really want my fan base to know how much I appreciate them,” adds the artist. “There’s a really strong connection between me, my music, and them. Every step I take, they’re helping me step up. So a big thanks and shout out to them.”

Out June 23, the compilation album, Ottawa x Toronto, will feature Dead Hendrix alongside upcoming and rising artists from Ottawa and Toronto. “Look out for my song…I’m really excited about that one and the album in general. This album is blending a whole lot and uniting a whole lot. My style is a risk but in a good way. It’s a great album,” shares Dead Hendrix of the compilation.

This year, Dead Hendrix is also gearing up for the release of a solo project that is still under development. A single from the project will drop following the release of Ottawa x Toronto.

Fans can also look forward to the official video for “Mustang,” which was just finished last week. The lyric video has already amassed over 100,000 views across platforms and continues to gain traction. As for the official video, “There’s a mustang in it,” jokes Dead Hendrix.
