Daryl Hall and John Oates have officially put an end to their tense legal battle, which had been described as the “ultimate partnership betrayal.”
The dispute began in 2023 over Oates’ intention to sell half of their joint business to music publishing company Primary Wave.
According to court records, the matter has now been settled through confidential arbitration, meaning the terms of the agreement remain undisclosed, including whether the sale to Primary Wave will move forward.
Hall & Oates rose to fame in the 1970s and ’80s with chart-topping hits like Rich Girl and Maneater.
Over the years, they split and reunited multiple times, and were still touring together as recently as 2022.
Their partnership unraveled publicly in November 2023 when Hall initiated arbitration to block Oates from selling his share in Whole Oats Enterprises, which controls the duo’s name, likeness rights, and royalty income, to Primary Wave.
Hall said he was “blindsided” by the proposal, explaining he opposed working with Primary Wave because he disagreed with how the company manages and monetizes the intellectual property of the artists it represents.
Legal documents also revealed the breakdown of their creative partnership, with Hall claiming Oates had recently become “adversarial and aggressive,” and that the two had been discussing the dissolution of their touring company and other shared ventures.
