Mariah Carey has revealed the former relationship she's still "angry" about.

The Heartbreaker singer has done her best to heal from a traumatic past relationship - her marriage to music executive Tommy Mottola.

Mariah, 56, and Tommy, 77, first started dating in 1991. As the head of Columbia Records, he had seen Mariah's potential and made her a star.

By the time they wed in a luxurious New York ceremony in 1993, Tommy had been promoted to CEO of Columbia's parent company, Sony Music.

"Sometimes I feel angry about that time, but I think I've made peace with it," Mariah told Harper's Bazaar UK in an interview published in the magazine's September 2025 issue. "In any case, I vowed I'd stop talking about it."

She went on to explain she typically tried to lighten the mood with jokes whenever the subject arose.

"Humour is my release, and people who know me know that," Mariah reflected.

"I'll make little jokes about what happened because otherwise I could make every day a sob story... It's a coping mechanism, but it's in my nature to laugh."

Mariah, two decades her husband's junior, previously described the marriage as prison-like.

"You might want to picture a child bride," she told Cosmopolitan in 2019. "There was a conscious effort to keep me as this all-American, whatever that means, girl. It was very ­controlled. There was no ­freedom for me as a human being. It was almost like being a prisoner."
