The former co-founder of the heavy metal group Mastodon has died in a motorcycle accident this week.
Brent Hinds was 51 when the Harley-Davidson he was riding struck a BMW SUV in Atlanta, Georgia.
Police told Atlanta News First that the crash happened around 11:35 p.m. on August 20. Investigators later explained that the collision was caused when the female driver of the SUV failed to yield while turning at an intersection.
According to a police report, Hinds was discovered "unresponsive" at the scene.
"The male appeared to be operating a Harley Davidson during the time of collision," the report noted. Medical personnel pronounced the male deceased."
Hinds stepped away from Mastodon in March after spending 25 years with the band. While the announcement was initially described as a mutual decision, he later hinted that the departure had not been on friendly terms.
The rest of Mastodon released a statement on social media mourning his loss.
"We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we've shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many," the group shared.
Our hearts are with Brent's family, friends, and fans. At this time, we please ask that you respect everyone's privacy during this difficult time."
