Mariah Carey has shared her excitement after All I Want for Christmas Is You reached a historic milestone on the charts.
Earlier this week, Billboard confirmed that the 1994 festive favorite has set a new record for the longest run at number one on the Hot 100, spending a total of 20 weeks at the top.
Speaking to the publication in an interview released on Wednesday, Mariah described the achievement as “amazing.”
“Honestly, it really is. I can't lie,” the global superstar said with a smile, admitting she had “no idea” the song would endure the way it has when she co wrote it alongside Walter Afanasieff. “That just became such a thing that I never could have predicted it ever.”
That said, Mariah acknowledged she does not expect All I Want for Christmas Is You to continue extending its record much longer.
“Yeah, but at a certain point it's not Christmas anymore, and you know, well, but I love it. I'm about to get to my holiday destination and go enjoy the holidays myself because I'm putting on this Christmas show,” the Believe singer added.
Mariah first recorded All I Want for Christmas Is You for her fourth studio album, Merry Christmas.
Now widely regarded as a holiday classic, the song stands as the best selling Christmas track of all time in the United States and was officially added to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress in 2023.
The 56 year old singer has also recently wrapped up a run of live performances as part of her Mariah Carey's Christmas Time residency in Las Vegas.
