Chappell Roan is seeing the funny side after her near nude look on the 2026 Grammys red carpet sparked global headlines on Sunday evening.
The much discussed outfit was a custom maroon Mugler gown inspired by the fashion house’s 1998 nipple ring design. Roan initially arrived wrapped in a sheer cape before removing it to reveal the topless silhouette beneath.
“Giggling because I don’t even think this is THAT outrageous of an outfit,” Roan wrote alongside a carousel of photos shared on her Instagram on Monday February 2. “The look’s actually so awesome and weird. I recommend just exercising your free will it’s really fun and silly ? Thank you for having me @grammys and those who voted for me!!”
A video of Roan on the red carpet posted by Billboard has already racked up an eye catching 52 million views on Instagram and continues to climb. Reactions in the comments have ranged from “I love her but this is too much. Is she gonna get banned?” to “Okay but she really ate this look up.”
Roan returned to the Grammys this year as both a presenter and a nominee, following her breakout moment at last year’s ceremony where she took home best new artist. Her 2025 single “The Subway” was nominated for best pop solo performance and record of the year at the 2026 awards, though she ultimately lost out to Lola Young’s “Messy” and Kendrick Lamar’s “luther” with SZA.
When she later stepped on stage to present the best new artist award to Olivia Dean, Roan had swapped outfits, appearing in a one strap tan chiffon gown.
