PinkPantheress has opened up about once worrying that her appearance could shape the direction of her career.
The British singer-songwriter, born Victoria Walker, shared that in her earlier days, she chose to stay out of the spotlight and avoided revealing her face to the public.
In a discussion with fellow artist Clairo for Interview Magazine, PinkPantheress said her concerns came from how listeners might connect her image to her music.
"I never wanted to show my face because I didn't want it to affect how my music was received," she explained. "It wasn’t even about pretty privilege. It was more like, ‘What if people don’t like how I look? What if it doesn’t line up with what they hear in the music?’"
The Boy's a Liar singer went on to say that her looks have influenced her career in different ways.
"I think the way I look has actually affected people's willingness to listen to me," she said. "In some ways it’s helped me a lot, but in other ways it’s probably made some people less interested too."
The 24-year-old added that she feels more at ease being visible now, even though she still appreciates keeping a bit of distance from the spotlight.
"I'm way more outside now, I share my opinions more, but there’s still a part of me that wishes I held back on certain things," she said. "Maybe it would have slowed things down for me, but sometimes I really value having that sense of mystery."
"It's really beautiful to be someone who hides and then appears when a musical moment happens," she added. "Like Kate Bush. She’s one of my inspirations too."
