Neil Young‘s upcoming new album features three songs that he wrote 63 years ago.

The folk icon has recently completed his latest album, and has given fans some insight into the songs it will include.

In a new message shared to his Neil Young Archives site, he wrote that he and the Chrome Hearts have been working in Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La studio in Malibu on the record, which they began mastering during a recent full moon.

“It’s quite a special album to me. Music is a gift and when it comes like this I really feel it. Everything here feels so good. I hope you will agree,” he wrote.

He goes on to say that they recorded five new songs before running out and needing more. “The next morning I had a song going through my head and was playing it. I checked it out in the archives and found it was from 1963, unreleased,” he said.

“There were more. I found three others with it…. also unreleased! Three 60 year old songs and five brand new ones! We finished mixing and assembling one month later on the next full full moon… April 1st. It was fast! ”

Young then confirms that they have “a complete mastered record, ready to go.” It will follow the upcoming ‘As Time Explodes’ Chrome Hearts live album, which was recorded on their 2025 Europe and US tour.

He’d previously revealed that he was channelling anger at the Trump administration into the new album.

“Politics today is sad and depressing for me. I can’t do it anymore. I can go out and demonstrate my feelings about it. We have the worst president in the history of our country. Every day a bad TV show produced by DJT is what we get,” he wrote.

In spite of this, he said music was bringing him more joy. “Now, thankfully, once again, I’m in the studio recording a new album with the Chrome Hearts. I love the songs and the feelings of life and love. Music is. So far we have eight new songs. They make me feel.”

Young recently gifted his entire music catalogue to the people of Greenland for free, while hitting out at Amazon, Jeff Bezos and Donald Trump after the President threatened to annex the Arctic island.

He even joined Joan BaezBernie Sanders, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at the “Fighting Oligarchy” tour, where he performed songs live in opposition to the president.

In addition, he shared a song criticising Trump called ‘Big Crime’, where he hit out at the Republican party leader, and he also told his fans earlier this year that Trump was “out of control” and “we need a real president”.

More recently, Young cancelled his entire UK and European tour and said “this is not the time” to be playing shows.

He later provided some clarity on his reasons for axing the tour. Replying to a fan who was checking “everything is OK”, Young wrote: “All is good Michael. Just needed a break. Listening to my body.”
