Noah Kahan delivered a heartfelt apology from the stage to everyone affected by the cancellation of his New York City concert on Saturday, July 18.

“I just want to apologize for the cancellation of our show last night,” the singer and songwriter told the crowd during his Sunday, July 19, performance in footage recorded by Billboard. “I know you guys were all here. I don’t expect any sympathy at all. I am so f–king sorry for the folks that stood all day in the rain and traveled. I’ve been thinking about you guys.”

Kahan was originally expected to perform two consecutive nights at Citi Field in Queens, N.Y., but severe weather forced him to cancel the first concert. His second performance went ahead as scheduled the following evening, although he paused between songs to speak directly to those who had been disappointed one night earlier.

“I’ve probably played about 500 shows, and I’ve canceled six in my life, and they’ve only ever been when we cannot do anything else but cancel the show,” he continued. “I promise you I would play in a f–king volcano — in the hole of a volcano — for you all. I promise you we did everything we could, weird s–t to try to reschedule it, and I’m sorry, I just feel horrible. I’m really sorry. You deserve better than that.”

The Vermont musician’s emotional remarks followed a wave of complaints and messages from fans who waited through powerful thunderstorms hoping to watch him perform. The venue announced the cancellation shortly before the doors were expected to open. “This was a very difficult decision to make, but the first priority is always to keep everyone safe,” Citi Field explained after previously sharing an updated start time because of the dangerous conditions.

“Exhausted every option to make this happen.. love you guys,” Kahan also posted on his Story following the announcement.

The artist has been touring since the middle of June in support of The Great Divide, which spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The run began in Orlando and later visited Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago and several other American cities. After his shortened Queens engagement, Kahan will complete more North American dates before traveling to Australia in September and Europe in November.

Kahan was not the only performer whose plans were disrupted by New York’s storms. Zeds Dead also moved its Saturday night Forest Hills Stadium concert to Aug. 14, explaining in a statement, “The weather is just being too difficult.”
