Boy George has pulled out of Jesus Christ Superstar at the London Palladium only a few days before his scheduled debut.

The Culture Club singer had been expected to portray King Herod from 3 August until 15 August as one of several performers rotating through the role.

His manager, Paul Kemsley, confirmed the withdrawal in a social media statement posted on 30 July.

"After careful consideration, I have decided, in my capacity as Boy George's manager, that he will no longer be appearing in Jesus Christ Superstar at the London Palladium," Kemsley stated.

"The decision has been made with the utmost respect for the producers, the creative team and the entire company. We are grateful for the professionalism and understanding they have shown throughout and sincerely wish everyone involved every success with the production."

Kemsley offered no explanation for the change, although the news arrived shortly after George released his song supporting Israel, We Will Dance Again.

The reggae number begins with the lyric "You say genocide, I say war", disputing claims that Israel’s military operation in Gaza amounts to genocide. The track also takes aim at artists who have openly expressed support for Palestine.

Patrick Clanton, who performed with George in the Broadway staging of Moulin Rouge!, reacted to the release by saying he felt "embarrassed" to have worked alongside him.

According to NME, Richard Armitage, who currently stars as Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar, will step in for the performances George was due to play.
