BTS have confirmed that their latest album, ‘Arirang’, will not be entered for consideration at the 2027 Grammy Awards.

The decision follows the Recording Academy’s recent introduction of the Best Asian Pop Music Performance category for next year’s ceremony. The award will celebrate “artistic excellence” in Asian pop created within Asian markets, while eligible releases must make meaningful use of at least one Asian language.

All seven BTS members posted the same message through their personal Instagram Stories to announce that they would not submit the project.

“We have decided not to submit our work to this year’s Grammy Awards.” they stated. “We hope music can be heard and loved for itself, beyond regions or languages. We are grateful to our ‘ARMY’ and everyone who has always supported us.”

The Recording Academy has not yet issued a public response regarding the K pop group’s decision.

Tracks recorded completely in English cannot compete in the new category. BTS’ latest record includes several songs performed mainly in English, with ‘Swim’ featuring English lyrics throughout and therefore being ineligible for Best Asian Pop Music Performance.

Some believe that establishing a separate award could allow Grammy voters to acknowledge Asian musicians without giving them serious consideration in major fields such as Album of the Year.

NME previously opposed the introduction of a dedicated K pop prize, writing: “Pop music is pop music, regardless of geographical location, the racial or ethnic identity of those making it, the language it’s sung in, or any other factor you might choose to segregate people by.”

The 2027 ceremony is scheduled for February 7. The submission period began on July 7 and is due to finish on August 28.

In its review of ‘Arirang’, NME gave the record four stars and said: “After nearly four years, BTS are back doing what they do best – serving as both ambassadors and explorers, fuelled by curiosity and creativity.”

BTS recently appeared at the World Cup final halftime show curated by Chris Martin, performing alongside Madonna, Justin Bieber, Shakira, and Burna Boy.
