Tom Hamilton, the bassist of Aerosmith, has opened up about how the future could look for the ‘80s icons.
It comes as the band recently confirmed that their days of touring have come to an immediate end, following frontman Steven Tyler seriously injuring his voice at a gig.
The final show took place at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York on September 9, 2023, and no one – including the band themselves – knew it would be their last.
Held as part of their ‘Peace Out’ tour, the run of live shows kicked off last year, but the band only played three nights, before rescheduling the rest of the dates after Tyler injured his larynx.
Now, after confirming that they will no longer be playing live, Tom Hamilton has spoken out about how the future may look for the band.
“First let me start by clearing up some information on Steven’s injury. We were playing the third show of our ‘Peace Out’ tour last September. During the third song of the set, Steven had a fall that resulted in a fracture to his larynx. Somehow he finished the show. Don’t ask me how. It’s a testament to his strength and desire to give the people what they came for,” he began in a rare email interview with Charlie Kendall’s Metalshop.
“It wasn’t a case of him blowing his throat out by doing something wrong. He has been healing well and working his ass off to get ready to go back out on the road but it just wasn’t possible.
He continued, “The decision was made by the team which includes the band and our dedicated management… We don’t know what the future holds but it won’t include touring.”
He was also asked if the band would consider going on the road with a replacement vocalist in the future – an idea which was quickly shot down by the musician. “There’s been no talk at all about going on the road with another singer. I can’t imagine it,” he said.
“I’m sure all of us have music in our future and it will manifest itself in ways that we haven’t planned yet,” he added. “I’ve been playing in a band with some good friends. We have a bunch of really good songs and we hope to be putting them out soon and hopefully doing some gigs.”
Following the initial announcement, numerous famous faces came out to share their sadness at the news, with Queen guitarist Brian May explaining that the announcement “brought a tear” to his eye, and Sammy Hagar sharing his long history with the members, calling the retirement “a great fucking loss”.
It was later confirmed that fans could watch the band’s final ever show on YouTube in 4K quality.
Aerosmith’s last studio album arrived over a decade ago, when the band shared ‘Music From Another Dimension!’ in 2012. Steven Tyler’s last studio album arrived in 2016, in the form of a debut solo LP called ‘We’re All Somebody from Somewhere’.
