Green Day have revealed the soundtrack for their upcoming coming of age film Nimrods, along with a brand new song called ‘I’m Never Gonna R.I.P.’. You can listen to it below.
Ahead of the film’s August release, the soundtrack will be available on July 31. It features 22 songs spanning Green Day’s career, along with four previously unreleased live recordings captured at the Palladium in Los Angeles, which are also featured in the movie.
Also included is the new track ‘I’m Never Gonna R.I.P.’, a fast paced two minute burst of classic rock and roll energy. Listen to it below.
The Nimrods soundtrack also features music from The Paradox, Ultra Q, and Mckenna Grace, alongside four songs performed by Analog Dogs, the fictional group at the heart of the film. The soundtrack will be released on CD, cassette, digital services, and multiple vinyl editions. It is available to pre order here.
Nimrods will receive a limited theatrical release across the UK on August 11, with screening details and ticket information available here. It opens in cinemas across the United States on August 14. Written and directed by Lee Kirk in collaboration with Green Day, and produced by Tim Perell, the film follows three friends, portrayed by Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, and Ryan Foust, who head to Los Angeles after mistakenly believing their band has been chosen to support Green Day on New Year's Eve.
The road trip storyline draws inspiration from Green Day’s own early years, when the band spent long stretches travelling in a tour van before breaking through with their 1994 album ‘Dookie’.
The cast also features Ignacio Diaz Silverio, Keen Ruffalo, Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Mckenna Grace, Fred Armisen, Bobby Lee, and Sean Gunn.
The project has been in development since early last year, when it was first announced under the title New Years Rev. In April, the filmmakers officially changed the name to Nimrods, a nod to Green Day’s 1997 album ‘Nimrod’.
Soon after revealing the project, Green Day launched a casting call looking for “punks, emo, hardcore, alternative and rocker young adults” between the ages of 18 and 30 to appear in several scenes. The first trailer arrived last September, followed by the full official trailer released last month.
Earlier this year, Green Day attracted attention with their performance during the Super Bowl opening ceremony at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on February 8.
Billie Joe Armstrong and the rest of the band performed a medley of fan favourites from across their catalogue, including ‘American Idiot’. However, Armstrong chose not to sing the altered lyric “I’m not part of the MAGA agenda,” which he had been using during recent live performances.
The decision not to make a political statement caught many fans off guard, prompting some to share their disappointment on social media over what they viewed as a missed opportunity.
Green Day’s most recent studio album, ‘Saviors’, arrived in January 2024. In its four star review, NME described the record as “their best work since ‘American Idiot’”.
