Lou Koller, the original lead singer of influential New York hardcore band Sick of It All, has died after living with esophageal cancer. He was 59.

Sick of It All announced the news in an Instagram message posted Friday, July 24. “It’s with unbelievable sadness that we announce to our worldwide hardcore family the passing of our brother Lou Koller,” the band wrote, adding that 2026 would have celebrated the group’s 40th anniversary.

“We have lost a beloved friend and an iconic frontman. Lou had the power to raise everyone’s spirits at our shows with a smile and a sarcastic comment, and he won people over wherever we played, from every culture and every corner of the world.” The group also expressed gratitude to everyone who supported Koller’s medical fundraiser, saying his “battle is over now and he can finally rest.”

publicly disclosed his illness during the summer of 2024, explaining that doctors had discovered a tumor in his esophagus that reached into his stomach. Sick of It All called off a European tour to allow him to receive treatment, while members of the hardcore scene organized benefit shows and donated money to support him.

In May 2025, Koller shared that he was cancer free after completing his final chemotherapy session, although the illness returned several months afterward.

Sick of It All began in Queens, New York, in 1986 with Koller and his brother Pete, who played guitar in the group. The band developed within the same New York hardcore movement that produced Agnostic Front, Cro Mags and Madball during the late 1980s. They performed at venues including CBGB and earned a loyal audience through constant touring. Their first album, Blood, Sweat and No Tears, arrived in 1989 and became an important release within the genre. By 2020, the group had sold at least 500,000 records around the world during a career spanning almost four decades.

The band achieved its greatest commercial success during its major label period in the mid 1990s. Released through East West in 1994, Scratch the Surface received strong reviews and featured the singles “Scratch the Surface” and “Step Down,” with the latter gaining regular MTV exposure. It remains Sick of It All’s best selling record. Built to Last followed in 1997 and climbed to No. 32 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums chart. The group later joined Fat Wreck Chords and continued recording into the 2010s, releasing its latest album, Wake the Sleeping Dragon!, in 2018.

Throughout their career, Sick of It All earned recognition as one of hardcore’s most lasting and highly regarded groups. Koller was celebrated for his warm personality and generosity as much as his work onstage. He leaves behind his fellow band members, including his brother Pete, and an international fan community developed over 40 years of touring.
